    Ridley Scott's Showtime Pilot Announces Matthew Goode First Cast Member

    Ridley Scott will executive produce and will direct the pilot for The Vatican, a new drama on Showtime, which will be a modern thriller set among the corridors of power of the Catholic Church (which seems very timely now with a new Pope soon to be elected). The pilot's script is written by Paul Attanasio, Oscar nominated for writing the screenplays for Quiz Show and Donnie Brasco.

    The new development on this from today is that the first castmember has been announced for the show, and it's Matthew Goode. He will be playing Bernd Koch, the " Pope's closest confidante who has a very powerful perch within the inner circle of the Vatican."

    Kyle Chandler will play the lead, Sebastian Koch also joins the show
    Chandler will play Cardinal Thomas Duffy, the charismatic yet enigmatic Archbishop of New York, whose progressive leanings (he has ordained a woman) excite some and alarm others within the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. Koch will play Cardinal Marco Malerba, the Vatican’s Secretary of State who is informally known as the “dark prince of the Curia” for his proven abilities to ruthlessly wield power within the Church hierarchy.
