A problematic 7.
It's completely all over the place, but there's also a lot that incredibly entertaining (and, rarely, legitimately moving). I still think Hooper and the producers should have taken more time to open up the production in a more cinematic way as the film itself seems underwhelming in comparison to the scope of the things that are happening on screen.
Also, the supporting characters are far more enjoyable than the leading men (Jackman, either horribly miscast or just horrible, and Crowe, both horribly miscast and just horrible). If we ignore them, Redmayne, Barks, Tveit, and Hathaway make for one of the best ensembles of the year and a lot of the minor roles are exceptionally well played (I die a little bit on the inside every time I think about how hilarious the Thenardiers were!)
Lastly, while some of the individual numbers are both well-sung and well-filmed ("Lovely Ladies", "Master of the House", "Red and Black", "On My Own", "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables"), I'm uncertain if they add up to anything coherent? And that's totally ignoring the fact that some of the numbers are both terribly sung and terribly filmed. It's a lurching piecemeal of emotional and musical bombast.
I think I'll just get the Blu-ray and skip all of the parts I didn't like. Or maybe when I see it again, I'll like the bad parts more. Who knows?

That's why I say so, because you've upgraded it 3 points in like, 1.5 months! That's the power of this piece, next time you'll watch it you'll be weeping your eyes out!
Yeah, I gotta say how unconvincing everything about Javert was. And I'm not only talking about Crowe who acted okay and sung badly, but the whole character just doesn't seem to have much weight at all (granted, I had just finished the book when I first saw it, and Javert just kinda works better on the pages than on a stage), and I don't really know who to blame. I will say that every other actor did everything they could with their characters - I mean, I'd single out Seyfried, as in the musical, Cosette is an incredibly nothing role, yet she brings something interesting to it.
I know I've got a big ego, I really don't know why it's such a big deal, though.
It was painful for me. Crowe's voice was awful. And the concept did not work for me. Hooper's directing style annoyed me so much I could not concentrate on the scenes.

So I..... liked this? LMFAO.
The music was pretty good and I liked ll the technical specs (the cinematography never bothered me but the CGI did). The performances from Redmayne, Barks and Jackman () were all pretty good, Hathaway was way too calculated (but has a lovely voice), Crowe was just meh, and Seyfried sounds like a mouse on helium.
A 6 but I rounded it up to a 7 because of the thud Javert makes when he hits the water. Amazing.
