HOLY MOTORS ROLLS TO VICTORY AT 10th ICS AWARDS

The strange journey from life to death, the identities we choose and change along the way, fuel a dazzling display of cinematic imagination in Holy Motors, which has won top honors from the International Cinephile Society as the best picture of 2012. Enigmatic filmmaker Leos Carax also took home prizes for best director and film not in the English language, while Denis Lavant’s chameleonic tour de force brought him the best actor win.
As Amour’s long-term lovers who together face debility and death, 85-year-old legend Emmanuelle Riva swept away the best actress field while steadfast Jean-Louis Trintignant earned runner-up honors in best actor.
A mystic, tragic Africa of rock-n-roll and crocodiles stole many ICS voters’ hearts, as the wildly innovative Tabu couldn’t quite overtake Holy Motors, but still managed a win for its highly original screenplay, along with runner-up mentions for best film, non-English language film, and director Miguel Gomes.
Also well-loved were two unrelated Anderson films – supporting actor and actress going to Philip Seymour Hoffman as a cult leader/con man and Amy Adams as his quietly controlling wife in Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, while Wes Anderson’s paean to young love, Moonrise Kingdom, ran away with the ensemble cast and production design awards.

Good choices! Except for the supporting categories: two leads on the men's side and weakness on the women's side.

Again, am I the only one who doesn't get what the hell it is that's so special about Dario Marianelli's "Anna Karenina" music?

I certainly would have preferred Beasts of the Southern Wild or Cloud Atlas.

These three are basically my top 3 of the year, by far.
I know I've got a big ego, I really don't know why it's such a big deal, though.

These wins are lovely. Holy Motors, Amour, and Tabu are three of the major highlights of 2012 for me, so it's a joy to see them all recognized so significantly here.

And even as someone who didn't care for Moonrise Kingdom, I can't deny the brilliance of its production design.

Lavant's win is my favourite, though.
