Plus, the directors neglected to nominate Affleck, so it would seem they weren't too smitten with his work. So, whoever wins can remind himself of that fact -- You gotta first have the love of your branch (nomination) before you can get the love from the whole Academy (win), and Affleck missed the first part.
Exactly. Those directors branch must have not cared for him too much. So i doubt they or the real nominees are losing sleep about it. lol

I feel like people jump on the bandwagon too quickly; if Lincoln wins WGA watch people start calling Spielberg for the win.

And if Argo wins, as most expect...?

Actually, Tomlin and Russell made up and are still friends! She introduced or presented him with some award back when he was working the circuit for The Fighter. So I guess she's voting for him.

So Russells BAFTA win means SLP is gaining popularity even though best actress "lock" Jen Lawrence lost to Riva?

I don't think so. I love both of those upsets, but I really can't see a trend in them, especially from a European award, even if their voters somewhat overlap with Hollywood.

    Over Lincoln, yes.

Although maybe you think haneke can win Best Director?

It definitely is. Lincoln and Argo have been the only real contenders for the Adapted Screenplay Oscar so SLP beating them is a much bigger upset than Riva beating Lawrence here.

Especially since they clearly loved Argo still. Argo will still probably win the Oscar since it's the only other major award it can win, but SLP winning anything after its tepid nomination total I think indicates that SLP as a whole is beginning to grow (Even if Lawrence is on shaky ground).

It would be amusing/strange if SLP lost the award it was always thought to have the best chance at, while winning somewhere it was thought to be an also-ran for most of the season. Can anyone think of a precedent for this? (I guess Gods and Monsters losing Actor but winning Sceenplay comes close, but it's not that strong an example).

I love that comparison, that win was a big surprise.

I said he would lose some votes not all. Some AMPAS members are so touchy in 2008 one member said they weren't voting for Winslet because they didn't like her Golden Globe speech. Either way that wasn't the only reason I listed as to why I don't think he'll win.

Well, the 2008 result should be evidence enough that people like that are an irrelevant minority in AMPAS.

If that were true Anne Hathaway would be in last place and Field or Adams would be winning.

Winslet was the frontrunner and I repeat that's not the only reason why I think Russell will lose.

I'll repeat for the third time that's not the only reason I listed as to why I don't think he'll win. Also, Hathaway was criticized by Internet award watchers, haven't heard about any AMPAS member trashing her.

Then Russell's disrespectful attitude towards Riva is also only "a big deal" among internet oscar watchers.

So everyone's thinking Russell now b/c it won Adapted Screenplay at the BAFTA's? Is that enough? I still feel like Spielberg has more name recognition / clout / and a Best Actor winner to win it (a la Polanski in 2002).

It would be awesome though to see SLP sweep some of the majors - including BP (!)

And not even to the bloggers and pundits. It's only people on message boards that care.

Dimitri, stop listening to everyone at IMDB, they're the only ones that care.
