McCarthy's Bridesmaids role could pretty much be done by any non-beautiful actress. The majority of her "schtick" there is not her weight but her messiness and bizarreness.

Anyway, she's had three major roles I can think of and only her TV show is based around her weight.

Is it? I've never seen an episode, but outside of the fact that she's married to an overweight man, is that the basis for the show's humor?

Yup. The fact that both are overweight is basis of the humor. They even meet at Overweight Anonymous if i remember correctly. I also think what Erik said that being overweight is part of her stchik. It does not mean that she is not talented otherwise or I support Reed's comment. Those are inexcusable, the sexist language and tone that he used.

At least this vile review is being blasted in the comments on The Observer website. Personally, I've enjoyed McCarthy since Gilmore Girls.

Rex Reed might have mattered when I was young, I didn't know anyone paid attention to him these days.

Now that they are married it is much more relationship humor. It's turned into Mad About You with some occasional weight jokes. But in the most recent episode I don't think there was any.

I fucking love Melissa McCarthy and anybody who thinks otherwise is no friend of mine.

Also, it's such an easy point to make, but I doubt Reed or like-minded individuals have ever insulted larger males for their weight. Another thing, McCarthy's weight really isn't part of her schtick. Like, at all.

That's why Reed's words are so vile. He could have critiqued her brand of humor without mentioning her appearance.
He's a jerk no matter what, but it's only misogyny if he directs these kind of remarks toward women and not men.

Does he also make awful comments about overweight men?

LOL, Rex Reed didn't even matter when I was young. That said, there are going to be soooo many fat jokes when Christie runs for president, all those people worried about the double standard, there's going to be equal time.

this is what hurts me more, as soon as I read the review I thought I bet he is gay, I met so many fatphobics people in the gay community, my chubby and average gay friends feel even more excluded, breaks my fucking heart.

So he attacks her on her obesity out of the blue, even if said obesity is not a plot point of the film (at least not by the sound of his review)? What an ass. I mean, I'm all for joking about obesity, but this is extremely vile and personal.

Though I love his cheap shot at Judd Apatow at the end .

I think there's a difference though with where the jokes will come from. At the most I am sure most of Christie's fat jokes will come from Comedy Talk Shows. Where as Rex Reed is supposed to be a professional and "distinguished" film critic. In the latter profession is seen more of a scholarly light than like let's say Conan O'Brien or Bill Maher.

Rex Reed is just being a vituperative old queen, like he has been for decades. It's his stock-in-trade. Not excusing it, but I'm not surprised.

Let's imagine the response to Comedy Show Hillary Clinton waddlebut jokes versus Chris Christie lardass jokes (granted Christie's the size of at least a couple Hillary Clintons). I think people would tend to get more outraged about the one than the other, but overweight men do get subjected to this stuff in society too now (see AnaFaria's comment about this issue above). Christie must have some sense of self-esteem because if I weighed what he did, given the crap I would have to put up with every day, I would never want to even leave the house.

The thing that I see a lot with overweight people in the media, particularly Christie right now, is the concern trolling. It's the fake concern for their well-being, as if constantly talking about their weight and the medical repercussions, along with really snide and unnecessary remarks, will result in the person having an epiphany and immediately losing 100lb. That really aggravates me. You don't actually give a shit about Christie or McCarthy's health, you just want an easy target.

That all came up with all the people who wanted to talk about Gabourey Sidibe's weight during Oscar season a few years back, all out of concern for her health, of course (cause they really, really care about her, you know, really).

Of course with Christie it's a legit issue if he ran for president, but people always manage to get the snide comments in too. There was this one guy saying on Soledad's show on CNN just this morning that a fat person shouldn't be president because he would be a poor model for American youth, which I think is taking it a bit far. You could also make the argument that a plus size person might be a good model because he or she would show fat kids you actually can survive school bullying and amount to something in your life.
