Coincidentally, if you look up director in wikipedia, the first name in their list of notable directors is Ben Affleck.

I'll second that. A bit of time away does wonders for perspective. I was catatonic after Scorsese lost to Eastwood, after Crash won.

Now I just invest less, accept my favourites rarely win and enjoy the race for what it is. It's so much more fun this way!!

Exactly. You should consider it a lucky coincidence when the concensus of 6000 random strangers happens to match your own opinion, not take it as a personal outrage that it doesn't. I mean we're talking about a film that has TWELVE nominations and could easily win FOUR major Oscars. That Sasha is acting like this film has been severely disrespected in some way is just laughable especially considering it was never a real frontrunner to begin with nor is the opinion that it is the year's best a concensus one (as it was for BBM, where some level of outrage over its treatment was maybe warranted, though futile). How about those of us who think LoP or ZD30 are the best nominees? Those films will win nothing major.

All this love for Argo and SLP makes me want to vomit. I can't believe there are people actually feeling sorry for Affleck being snubbed, like, have they actually seen the movie?????

Like Bob Dole said back in 1996 (I'm sure everyone remembers), where's the outrage?

As disappointing as Lincoln as an Oscar juggernaut was, Argo just seems strange. Lincoln or SLP seem more natural Oscar pics to me. Heck, or why not Les Mis even? I mean in terms of traditional Oscar picks.

It looks like the clear winner for best picture now, though. Anyway, AMPAS loves actor-director efforts, right? After all, they gave picture Oscars to Redford and Costner and Gibson films. And Eastwood, the love for him never ended (at least until that convention speech last year).

Unless AMPAS doesn't want to embarrass the director branch or something now. They don't allow a director write-in do they? Maybe the Supreme Court should decide this.

One thing's for sure, Affleck could direct Springtime for Hitler as his next film and win best director. Can you say makeup Oscar?

Pretty late to the party here, but I have to chime in and say I absolutely love that we have a movie that's sweeping the guilds and even after taking the damn DGA, there's still some doubt about its ability to win the Oscar because no matter what, some crazy shit is going to happen that night. I mean, nearly all of us have been expecting an Argo win at the Oscars (and I certainly don't see my prediction changing after this), but it's going to put Argo in pretty rare company without that director nod and its win almost certainly needs to be backed up by an Arkin or Screenplay win. The only alternative is a movie taking Picture/Director without any major precursor support. This is nuts!

I had checked back to 2000 about guild wins and was reminded that Million Dollar Baby was a real late bloomer, missing GG, PGA, and SAG, and only really taking over with Eastwood's DGA win. With that in mind, I figured there was the tiniest chance that Spielberg or Lee could win the DGA this year and turn the race. But since things went according to plan, I feel pretty confident that Argo is our Oscar winner. I think the lack of a director nod will fall to the power of massive guild support, although Moviefreak has made a good point about AMPAS doing their own thing this year, so really, who knows!

Lack of passion for Lincoln will always be the mystery of this year for me. I guess not too many love American (particularly Civil War) history all that much anymore.

This could hardly be any truth, as the Hatfields vs Mccoys was one of the most critically acclaimed and viewed TV programs this year.

Decades ago I remember reading in some trade paper that motion pictures (made around/after the early `40`s) with the name "Lincoln" in the title did not do well at the box office. While films about or in reference to President Lincoln continued to be made, the name was seldom used in titles. This may have had something to do with southern states` distribution.
This current LINCOLN is rightfully solemn, but very interesting and timely, although slowly paced. Some of the scenes almost seem posed for a tableau. Although the film good (not great), and very well acted, there may not be enough "action" for some audiences. No surprise, really.
Have not seen ARGO, but I`m happy for the talented Affleck.

Fun Fact: Driving Miss Daisy and Braveheart won the WGA. However Prizzi's Honor beat out both Out of Africa and the Color Purple.

Yes. Those two "Lincoln" titled films (from the period I mentioned) came to mind as possibly two of the last... Gotta get to imdb to see what came later on...
