LOL, it's only I'm a big fan of Les Misérables, so they thought I would get mad at you, but I'm polite during a new poster's first 21 posts.

Oh thanks. A friend of mine is a fan too and I get it, it's just really not my kind of thing.

I know I've got a big ego, I really don't know why it's such a big deal, though.

Like Cricket said, I wasn't even sure how to view certain scenes, like the last scene of Isabelle Huppert looking around the apartment-- was she thinking about her parents or how much the place was worth! LOL because these characters are paper-thin. Oh, JLT slaps Riva ! Now he's a complicated individual!

And I'm baffled by those who find any sense of humanity in this. Art provides the characters with no solace, no comfort. Their whole lives have seemingly been lived for no reason whatsoever. They have no real connections to friends or family. They use the lower class as their work horses. In fact, I viewed this almost as one seriously fucked up dark comedy (the cut to the dead body/AMOUR ), a totally nihilistic representation of lived experiences and time's passage. It's like Funny Games with old people and the criminals are, in this instance, our bodies and time.
I think it depends on your worldview.

If you view aging and death as natural, and perfectly fine, then I can see why a film saying the exact opposite would bother you. If I were more pessimistic, I would indeed say that the passing of time and the aging process of our bodies is cruel and unfair.

I honestly fail to see what's so terrible of pointing this out.

But I think we've kinda exhausted this discussion in the film's own thread.
