Best/Worst Super Bowl Halftime Show?
No not a new poll this soon from me, but I found this list and I guess its worth talking about considering we have the Big Game this sunday with Beyonce this year's alternative to piss breaks and fridge raiding at halftime.
Billboard did their own Top 10 Best. Thoughts?
1. Prince (2007)
2. Janet Jackson & Justin Timberlake (2004)
3. U2 (2002)
4. Michael Jackson (1993)
5. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band (2009)
6. Aerosmith, 'N Sync & Britney Spears (2001)
7. Rolling Stones (2006)
8. Madonna (2012)
9. Diana Ross (1996)
10. Paul McCartney (2005)
My thoughts on that list: Madonna is rated way too low, I would put her top 5 perhaps. MJ's is rated way way too high because we're still I guess in the glow of his passing. (Even as a kid I remember that infamous long opening where he says and does nothing and thought it was goofy.) I wonder how much of U2's show is remembered for the 9/11 memorial that it has colored that memory? The only thing about the Boss's show I remember is his crotch sliding into that camera. I don't want to take points away from the Stones and Macca, they didn't do anything wrong but they pretty much did what you expect from them.
I guess I agree with their #1 pick and no not just because I'm obviously biased towards Prince. I admired that it was raining that night at Jacksonville so he and his band had to work in that downpour hell he wore sandpaper in his heels so he wouldn't get electrocuted (true story) and he still did a spectacular show. Plus I find it fitting that he performed his signature track in the rain. I even liked that he made a risk in covering songs from other artists (like Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower") instead of squeezing in more greatest hits, and it worked naturally. Which is why its hilarious whenever he bitches at people for covering his songs. He covering that Foo Fighters track is especially funny because if I remember correctly, he sued them for covering "Darling Nikki." Also you gotta love the shadow phallic games he was doing with his guitar behind that curtain that he got away with.
Worst show? Black Eyed Peas.
The Black Eyed Peas are definitely worst.
Prince was amazing. I loved Springsteen.
Rewatching this for the first time since '02...still chilling and powerful.
A spectacle that locals would call a "hot mess," but I consider that a compliment here. Even if you're not a fan of Madonna (and I can't say I am), you're giving alot of insane spectacle bang for your buck for 12 minutes. The only mark I give against that performance was really the pointless shoehorning of LMFAO into the show. Why? She didn't need supporting acts. But alas I suppose she or the sponsors panicked and feared they wouldn't draw ratings with the kids or something. Otherwise quite flawless. (I didn't notice that Madge misstep until it was pointed out to me in replay.) Honestly I forgot all about the Cee Lo Green cameo when rewatching this, but that worked.
Er, let's not leave off the fact that besides Billboard, Rolling Stone just did an online poll of what half-time show was best and Madonna won, so there.
Well, its a very good pick for #1 so I can't say I'm surprised.

Though I was a fan at the time, Shania Twain's performance was cringe-worthy. Awful song choices for the Super Bowl that was obviously lip-synced made for a very forgettable performance.
