    Mystery Science Theater 3000

I did a poll on MST3K hosts awhile back, and I guess I decided let's continue my MST3K fandom.

This week's episode from the Joel Hodgson era: The post-apocalyptic clunker CITY LIMITS with James Earl Jones, Kim Cattrall. and Rae Dawn Chong. Future MST3K host (and then head writer) Mike Nelson co-stars as Morrissey. "Did I mention that I cried?"

I loved...LOVED spending my Saturday mornings grabbing some breakfast to go at McDonalds and watching MST3K on the SciFi channel! I was heartbroken when it was finally cancelled for good. But it's great seeing them back on Rifftrax.

You know, I just love this 50s sci-fi turkey's title "Teenagers from Outer Space", if only because once you read that without knowing anything else about the movie, you know it must be a 50s black & white B-movie. Except this film is more a F-movie.

Tying in with a Music Criticism thread, this week's episode, the 1958 B-movie Daddy-O which was actually the debut film score for John Williams.

I thought MST3K would remain on Netflix forever.

Anyone know when the episodes were taken down?

I only started watching when Michael Nelson took over hosting duties and Bill Corbett (whom I ABSOLUTELY love) took over Crow.

So I must admit...I have a hard time watching the older MST3K episodes with Joel.

They were taken down from Instant sometime back. You can still Netflix the Rhino-releases, including I believe (unless its beenpulled) a certain monster movie that MST3K riffed that Toho didn't grant clearance, thus had to be pulled from sale.

Or there's always YouTube, thank the Gods!

I promise next week's episode, err "experiment," will be from the Nelson era. (And one probably considered one of the best.) I didn't mean to pick Joel episodes so far, but maybe it was subconcious since I got into MST3K during that era?

    No big deal. LOL

Most people love the Joel episodes more. But I'm just so used to Mike and Bill...along with Kevin.

    Who's bought Rifftrax?

They're pretty much MST3K, except on the blockbusters and big Hollywood movies. We have Mike T. Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill T. Corbett (plus guest stars here and there) doing these tracks and yes, its just like if MST3K was never cancelled and had the budget to riff movies people have actually seen. (Incidentally Joel Hodgson has his own rival riffing business of his own with several other former MST3K writers/cast members in Cinematic Titanic, but they've just announced they're indefinately on hiatus due to schedule problems.)

Heck yeah. I love me some Rifftrax. My favorites are 300 and Revenge of the Sith. Hilarious.

    "Outlets in Space!"

Ah yes, finally an episode from the Mike Nelson era. And one of the best! "Space Mutiny" is a story of killer guard rails, Pat Riley as the villain, a damsel in distress old enough to be the hero's Mom, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (old show, not new better show) stock footage for "FX," and....Cameron Mitchell?!?

I believe the MST3K crew called this the worst movie they ever riffed.

Now think about that claim for a moment. And believe it, it's true! (It's hard to watch, even with the MST3K commentary.)

If you've never seen the horror that is MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE, then you're only a poor cinema virgin.
