    Best Actor 2013

Here's the first of my three polls to go along with the ones that WOV posted earlier today. Who are looking like the good early contenders for the leading men of 2013? We've already had some very interesting developments, what with The Fifth Estate being confirmed as a 2013 release and Fruitvale emerging from Sundance.

Clooney makes a lot of sense a year in advance, but I can definitely envision a scenario in which the supporting actors are more buzzed and he just takes Producing/Directing/Writing nominations. Then again, he is absolutely adored, so...

That's true, though I have Clooney in second, I could see a scenario where his role is like the Affleck role in Argo.

From what I can tell he could go either way. When I post the Supporting Actor poll in a bit he'll be on there too.

Good point! During the past where he's responsible for more than just the acting (Good Night & Good Luck, The Ides of March), he wasn't nominated for it and got directing, producing and/or writing instead. Though it's not safe to eliminate him, but I'd guess I'd replace him with Bale in my preds.

Yeah, that's my thinking re Clooney for The Monuments Men. He doesn't seem to shine as an actor when starring in his own directorial efforts. Still, he's a strong contender, of course, simply for being George Clooney.

Yeah. Come to think of it, maybe I mentally put Clooney just on the outside for Dern at the moment.

Holy crap is this year crowded, even by Best Actor standards.

I have Dern at no. 1 for the moment. I really think he's getting nominated: he plays a drunkard who takes a road trip w/ his estranged son... he's a previous nominee... and he's in a film from Alexander Payne, who has directed actors to nominations for each of his last three films

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking at this point. I think both he and Carrell are ahead of McConaughey at this point, simply for the fact that they're being directed by award proven directors and not a wildcard like Jean-Marc Vallée.

Cumberbatch and Carell have greater question marks than Dern I would say. Cumberbatch the question of whether Condon can recover from the Twilight phase of his career and Carell has a combination of praised script, great role and Bennett Miller, but I could see him getting Jim Carrey'd where he hits virtually all precursors and gets snubbed because he's not taken seriously.

And yet I have them in over Dern. Figures.
