Sundance is over, we're a year in advance ... who are your picks for Best Actress 2013 nominees ?

There is no breakthrough actress from Sundance this year (unless you really want to include Woodley or Seyfried) so I wonder where a first timer could come from. Maybe Olsen for Therese Raquin?

I thought of picking Cotillard, but she has had such bad luck. I don't want to get my hopes high. Again.

Those are the only ones I feel pretty good about. After that I threw a vote at Delpy (Out of wishful thinking ) and Roberts for reasons that I don't quite remember even though I voted just 40 seconds ago...it's a great role, but I think she might fuck it up Russell Crowe style. Probably should have just voted for Bullock (though the movie might ended up being viewed more as a technical achievement).

Julia Roberts' role is absolutely a lead in the play, and I'm still not confident that she'll be pushed lead. It feels like Meryl Streep dwarfs everything else in every movie she does.

This is also what I expect anyway. With co-leads in stage show adaptations, usually at least one of them gets demoted, even when it's debatable - see Crowe in Les Miz, Hudson in Dreamgirls, Hoffman in Doubt (Another Streep co-star!). Being a big role in Supporting would in theory help Roberts, but I think Martindale or Nicholson will deliver stronger performances.

Yeah, I think the fact that Martindale and Nicholson (and Lewis?) have good, baity Supporting roles will make it harder for them to demote Roberts to that category. In the examples like Les Mis, Dreamgirls, Doubt, etc., the person getting demoted (Crowe, Hudson, Hoffman) had little/no other competition. In Lead, Roberts would only have to contend with Streep, whereas in Supporting, she'll have to contend with 2-4 other ladies. I imagine her category will remain a question mark through most of the year, though.

No idea but I'll go with conventional actressing

    Cotillard
    Kidman
    Streep
    Watts
    Winslet

Blanchett still not clear which project to choose from, Roberts unknown placement yet, Bullock dont know about the genre,

I'd push Lawrence above if she fails to win this year, but I don't see her getting three in four years and all of them in Lead. Then Delpy in tenth.

Fuck it, I voted for Delpy because that's more interesting.

    Bullock
    Cotillard
    Delpy
    Lawrence
    Streep

    Main Alternates (no order)

    Blanchett
Roberts ( if campaigned in Lead)
    Thompson
    Kidman
    Seyfried

The role of Therese Raquin is a powerhouse, one of the baitiest in all of literature - it has everything: adultry, intrigue, lust, murder, suicide....
If Olsen nails it and the film is really well received (which are two big ifs), she has a really good shot of a nomination.

    1. Streep
    2. Bullock
    3. Cotillard
    4. Winslet
    5. Lawrence

    alt: Roberts

    Newbie??

Plus, I can see Watts winning if her film is any good (She's be a 3x nominee in a see of former winners, providing of course JLaw wins this year). But right now I have no confidence in that project at all.

    Cotillard
    Seyfried
    Streep
    Winslet

I don't really think "Lovelace" is going anywhere, but of the newbies she makes the most sense to me right now. Delpy? I wish, but nah.

Only a few performances look Oscar material, imo. The most surprising is that Winslet has son many votes for a road movie thriller.

    Right now I think:
    01. Meryl Streep, August: Osage County
    02. Sandra Bullock, Gravity
    03. Shailene Woodley, The spectacular now
    04. Julie Delpy, Before midnight
    05. Emma Thompson, Saving Mr. Banks

Woodley and Delpy looks strong for the newbie spot, both will have strong good critics and in the case of Woodley her snub for The descendants can only help her.
