I would say Soderbergh should have been replaced by Denis, but that's because it looks so ridiculous from the stills.

Ari Folman is at the Directors' Fortnight along with Jim Mickle's We Are What We Are with Kelly McGillis.

Very surprised Only Lovers Left Alive isn't premiering there.

To be upgraded from UCR to the main comp Denis should have replaced a French speaking film, and Soderbergh's isn't.

Liberace sure looked like he walked right out of the Louis XIV era though .

I LOVE all of Kechiche's films and I'm thrilled to see him entering the big one for the first time and that project/story with that casting are to die for, seriously! I would say Polanski should have been out of comp leaving the way for Denis and not Ozon or Kechiche.
Ozon's In the House was very nice, but I prefer any single Denis movie. It's an entire different league IMO. However I would love Ozon's last one to be great enough to deserve the spot over Denis.

I've seen a couple of Kechiche, L'esquive and Le Graine et le Mulet and I felt pretty unimpressed. Particularly the second one left me infuriated with Kechiche's cheap tricks to emotionally impact the viewer.

I love Ozon, so I'm glad he's in. Its a shame about Denis though. I genuinely think she is one of the best working and living directors today. White Material was phenomenal of her recent works and then there's always Beau Travail for all time. Why didn't she make it in over Despallieres? I consider myself well versed in international cinema but I've only heard small fleeting things about him in the past. Or is his film not considered French? Regardless, Denis (and Coppola) seems to be the only major filmmaker to get the shaft this year to Un Certain Regard (except Diaz for his fans), unlike last year where Dolan, Ye, and Trapero all missed out (regardless of the quality of their works).

Céd says the Despallieres film is the ona that's blowing everyone (who's seen it) away.

Interesting religious overtones in Borgman, now that I have seen the trailer with sound. Is the odd bearded man an angel, or does he think he is (I think it's him from behind in the opening shot)?

Also, English subtitled version of the Farhadi trailer:

I feel like the trailer is hiding a very important plot point.

Denis is a bit of an odd case. Despite impressively getting her first film, Chocolat, into competition in Cannes (her one appearance there), she's only ever been in the main competition of a major festival two other times, both in Venice (and once in Locarno, if you count that). Even her masterful 35 Shots of Rum premiered in a Venice sidebar. I think it's outrageous that she's not in competition; she's one of the best filmmakers alive. But maybe she doesn't object? She was the president of the UCR jury a few years back, so perhaps she's okay with being in that section.

I also find Ari Folman in Directors Fortnight strange. Or, at least it's kind of backward: getting into competition for his first feature and then going to the Fortnight for his second.

Becoming very interested in Michael Kohlhaas, though. Frankly, I've never heard of Arnaud Despallieres, but the von Kleist novella is indeed a masterpiece. It's been adapted, in one form or another, many times, so I'm curious to see what's special about this one. Denis Lavant's in it!

Here's the trailer for the Takashi Miike (without English subs):

This is so reminiscent to 2010 for me, very low on any big, Hollywood/Oscar-y hits but a GREAT list of films. Gurvan!!!!
