I really didn't blame Kate Winslet. She lost 5 times, I'm not surprised about her comments once she actually knew she had a chance in 2008. If Glenn Close could come closer to actually winning a film award, I'm sure she'd be just like that. And Natalie Portman was never really annoying in any of her speeches?

I liken Anne Hathaway's speeches to Hilary Swank's in 2004. She's just trying too hard and it comes off as really insincere to me. I'm sure she's a fine person, but c'mon don't go up there and say "Oh my God, this is really happening". Well, I mean...you can, but we all know you're going to win. You know you're going to win. This isn't a Marion Cotillard or Tilda Swinton scenario where it's a true up-in-the-air or tight race. Everyone knows she's going to win. Just like 99% of the people (minus Bening fanboys) knew that Swank was going to win in '04. So for Swank to say "I'm just a girl from a trailer park who had a dream" on the night where she won her second Oscar...it just seems really fake and bothersome. But I probably read too much into it anyway. I just hope Anne's speech is more like her SAG one (even that one wasn't perfect, but at least she wasn't "as" annoying).

I think Hathaway is probably a nice person who has no concept as to how to present herself in public.
Swank had far too many concepts as to what version of Swankness she wanted to present to the public. She will never be invited back to the Oscars again.
As for Winslet... I guess a lot of people were shocked to discover that she was not some delicate English rose, but so downright common and oh so very, very plain.

thats one of the biggest mysteries on AD and I guess nobody can give you a clear an objective answer to why one of the most down-to-earth, least caring actresses is dragged into this. Hathaway is an easy, easy target though (bubbly personality, caring A LOT about oscars, popcorn dominated filmography) and so far every actress that dominated the awards race was given some hatred. I don't think its anything surprising really and I guess Renées and Winslets winning years were likewise worse for their resume upon here. both were fairly liked prior to their oscar turns (as was the beloved Glenn Close before she got nominated for that The Butler prequel).

There's something wrong with this signature.
Can you find that ONE mistake?

She will obviously be back in 2032 for playing Martha Washington only to lose to Isabelle Allen in The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Swank can come back anytime. She was pretty close for Conviction as well.

LMAO, no she wasn't. It was a random SAG nod at best. Swank got more publicity for the possibility of a third Swank vs. Bening rematch than she actually did for the performance itself.

However, you are right...she's only 38, so the chances of her returning aren't completely out there. But I doubt she ever wins again. Unless of course, Annette is in contention, since the Academy seems to like that for whatever reason.

I saw Conviction and I immediately thought it was nothing more than Oscar bait, I wasn't surprised that the Academy didn't go for it.

Apparently, I am Team Hunt this year.
I never thought that would happen. Only at the Oscars!

Having not seen Adams yet, Hunt is easily the best of the other four.

Are we using "invited back" to mean "nominated?"

Exactly. I think a lot of people here just get carried away with actress threads. I mean, we reached number 7 on the "Best Actress, predictions" thread while all the others were at 3/4. And there is a lot of hating going on. You can definitely criticize an actor who knew (s)he was gonna win for giving "OMG I'm so surprised!!!" speeches (hathaway and Winslet). BUT!!! that should not then carry over to you assessment of their performance. I didn't go for Les Mis (except for the chorus parts, redmayne, the ending and hathaway). She gave a pretty good performance (not as good as redmayne though...). I criticized her when she won the globe and was like "OMG" but I still think she gave a very good performance.

Personally, I love Blanchett and think she should have at least 2 oscars already (Elizabeth and The Aviator) and I will root for her to get noms sight unseen just like I will all of my other favorites (Hanks, DiCaprio, PSHoffman, Moore and now Chastain). But I always try not to engage in hatred of other actors/actresses, like a lot of other people here on AD do (I mean... we actually have a thread called "Actresses!!!").

After properly seeing Field... ugh I want her to win desperately, she won't but, I want it.

I know this is a bit drama-queeny, but to think Adams and Field are going to be beaten by Hathaway (for that performance) makes me feel ill.

Romney's less subtle campaign message: "Don't ask questions and just vote for me!!"

So you were Team Hunt in '97, too?

I weep for Amy Adams. It's one thing losing to Leogend, it's another to lose to Princess Mia of Tryhardia.
