    Prince

I kinda hesitated in starting this thread because the whole idea of these fan threads is you know, post a classic hit or high quality deep cut and nerd out about these artists/acts we love. The problem for Prince fans is that he is notoriously pissy about YouTube, a control freak that ensures nobody can listen to any of his endless amounts of good songs (mostly unfortunately unknown outside his fanbase) or rewatch his music videos. (His video for "My Name is Prince" is so awesomely silly.) He's especially denying himeslf newer audiences who aren't aware of His Royal Badness and really, he surely would benefit from people discovering for themselves "Raspberry Beret" and The Black Album or priceless pop gems tossed away as mere B-sides like "Erotic City" or "She's Always in my Hair." Nevermind his great legendary bootlegs that are worth exploring, like the original unreleased takes of "Old Friends 4 Sale" and "Extralovable."

But then last week, by a 3rd party YouTube account (3rdEyeGirl) he's started leaking "bootlegz" and for a fan like me, I appreciated them all. A new decent song ("Same Page Different Book"), an extended funkier version of "Laydown," a rehearsal of "Bambi" (one of my all-time favorites of his), and a disco-hook remix of his recent single "Rock & Roll Love Affair" that's better than the released version. All unfortunately taken down, but I'm sure you can still find them out there online.

And on friday, he posted this recent tour rendition of one of his many 80s classic hits "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man."

I like how he vacates that track's Bruce Springsteen small town melodrama pop rock for a more slowed down, bluesy rendition. I'm very fond of the original, but still this is very damn good. Hopefully he continues to release more bootlegs and songs and whatever, allegedly to hype up for a new upcoming album out later this year which would be his first in 3 years. (or 4 if you don't count 20TEN, which he released only as a giveaway in European newspapers.)

Then again I guess such gross contradictions define Prince, and his eccentricities are part of what makes him amusingly fascinating. Before Paisley Park went to war against YouTube, he was the first major recording artist to release an album online all the way back in 1997 with CRYSTAL BALL. In fact when the labels were suing Napster into oblivion, he released a single ("The Work, Pt. 1") through them. In lyrics he bitched about rappers, before producing several rap tracks himself (and some are actually quite good). He's gone Jehovah's Witness, even though he famously once wrote about "Fucking the Taste/Out of Your Mouth." In recent times he bitches about modern gimmicky pop stars, which is rich coming from somebody who infamously posed nude for the LOVESEXY album cover and once upon a time wore on stage nothing except a thong and trenchcoat.

And yet I guess it must be said, sometimes it takes one to be nuts like him to actually innovate. Not just talking about his music, his 80s work was undoubtedly groundbreaking. But in retrospect, he was onto something about going independent. Sure the way he handled it publicly was quite frankly stupid and worthy of mockery (remember when he wrote "SLAVE" on his cheek? ), but really why keep giving up most of the money made from your songs to a label, especially in these times when they're desperately fighting for their lives? Why should a well-established pop music name/legend like Madonna or Jay-Z or Paul McCartney or whoever have to do that shit? It's stupid, especially the "360 Deals." I'm also reminded of his "comeback" album MUSICOLOGY. He hit upon the idea of giving that CD away with tickets for his tour, and thus scored himself a Platinum record. The charts subsequently changed the rules so this won't ever happen again, and that's kinda become a trick many other pop idols (Madonna recently comes to mind) have followed.

Mr. Nelson, you're crazy. But a crazy genius at times as well. Bravo mother fucker.

Anyway I guess we'll try to post YT videos and enjoy them while they last. Oh I wish more people knew of "Dinner With Delores" and "Act of God" and "Endorphinmachine" and so forth...

"Sexy MF" - Released June 1992, the first single issued from Prince's LOVE SYMBOL album released in October later that year. Due to the lyrical content, failed to gain significant radio play and flopped in the U.S., peaking at only #66 on the Billboard 100 and even worse on the R&B chart at #76. But it was a Top 5 hit in the U.K. (#4) and Australia (#5). A censored version of the single ("Sexy Mutha") was released in the States, but failed to chart. The music and most of the lyrics composed by Prince, Chorus and song title conceived by guitarist Levi Seacer, Jr. Tony M. delivers a rap that he penned. Recently covered in concert by the Dave Matthews Band as a segue way into their hit "Jimi Thing."

"Raspberry Beret" - Released May 1985 a month after the source album AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY was released. Charted #2 in the U.S., #25 in the U.K. Inspired psychedelic pop rock, one of his most popular classic hits.

True Story: the animation featured in the video was originally drawn by a bunch of cartoonists that Prince hired to make a video for the song during a time when he announced publicly that he wasn't doing anymore tours and videos featuring him. Months later, Prince showed up unannounced with his big bodyguard who politely told them that they were done and Prince took the footage with him and incorporated it into live-action film he already shot in secret.

"Sugar Walls" - by Sheena Easton from her 1984 album A PRIVATE HEAVEN. Written by Prince under the alias "Alexander Nevermind." (He can be heard in the backing vocals.) Top Ten hit on both the Pop (#9) and R&B (#3) charts in America, spent 9 weeks on the Pop chart. Flopped in Easton's native U.K., peaking at #95. The song's suggestive lyrical content about her vagina made it a popular target (along with the very clean music video) for the Religious Right and later included in the Parents Music Resource Center's infamous "Filthy Fifteen" list, which also included Prince's "Darling Nikki."

Prince now selling a few songs on that website above. All for 88 cents each. I guess its true that he really does hate iTunes. LOL.

Two new tracks premiere that haven't previously been released/leaked, including this "Breakfast Can Wait." (I do find it funny that a track making breakfast allusions to sex gets releaesd on National Pancake Day. LOL)

Meanwhile, "Screwdriver" is now for sale at iTunes, Amazon, Google, and other digital music selling websites. Or buy it from Prince directly and get it 11 cents cheaper.

    News?

•PEOPLE ARE talking about Prince's new CD, now in its planning stages. Prince is a great fan of the 1960s group Love. This band -- headed by Arthur Lee and Bryan Maclean -- was the first racially mixed rock band. They mixed a lot of styles -- classical, flamenco guitar, blues and hard-driving rock. Some feel Love was the forerunner of the much more successful The Doors. There were dramatic problems within the band, and the original group broke up in 1968. Their three albums are cherished by music aficionados.

Now, Prince wants to cover all of Love's great songs in a tribute album. Well, it would a profitable, smart way to introduce it all to a new generation that seems completely in the dark about the pleasures of Love.

I...don't get this. (nevermind the violations of grammar law in that message above.) I know he pitched an idea to Dr. Funkenberry about a "fan-run" website that would open up his famed Vault of music/videos/etc., nevermind that one doesn't know how such a concept would work realistically.

Dr. Funkenberry has revealed that Prince will be playing at the Montreux Jazz Festival, July 13-15. He'll also be appearing at the Skanderborg "Smukfest" Festival in Denmark on August 7th.

I will fight no damn war!

"Partyup" - Final track on Prince's 1980 album DIRTY MIND. Never released as a single, but became popular with club DJs, peaking #5 on the Billboard Disco Top 100. Prince has sole songwriting credit, but the track was inspired by a groove created by Morris Day. For the groove, Prince offered him either $10,000 or help in getting a record deal. Day accepted the latter deal, which would lead to him to becoming the lead singer for the Prince-created band The Time.

Performed on the February 21, 1981 episode of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, with Prince singing uncensored the "fightin' war is such a fuckin' bore" lyric line. (Later dubbed in reruns to "freakin.") Coincidentally this was the same episode where cast member Charles Rocket dropped the F-bomb on live national TV, which subsequently got him (and the show's producer) fired by NBC.

Prince put out a new song this past weekend for sale at his 3EG website, titled "Boyfriend (Demo)." I'll try to put up video for it if it pops up. Dr. Funkenberry reported that the next 4 songs to posted online will be: "Loosen Up", "LOL", "1 in Your Heart", and "Sun in the Sky."

(Oh dear he's adopting Internet slang now? Why not instead "El Oh El"?)

It's been revealed that the song he released on sunday ("That Girlfriend Thang") for the 3EG website he actually wrote and recorded it earlier that day.

And he's put out yet another new song today ("Live Out Loud") which he didn't record for himself but wrote/produced it for another group.

EDIT - They've released the track credits for this.

Reminder: Prince will be on Jimmy Fallon tonight.

"Elephants & Flowers" - Track from Prince's 1990 album GRAFFITI BRIDGE. Performed by Prince in the movie of the same name. Originally composed in 1988 (w/ different lyrics but same chorus) and planned for the original (aborted) version of the RAVE UNTO THE JOY FANTASTIC album. Initially the 4th song on BRIDGE, but switched places with "The Question of U" just before release.

    I guess I'm a stan.

I just downloaded his discography to re listen to some things. Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic is unfairly malignes, IMO. It's very good. Maybe I have no taste.

And I never realized what a nice follow up Around the World in a Day was to Purple Rain. Parade is also a very good-great collection. The placement of Kiss at the end makes for fantastic payoff. Graffiti Bridge, too! I didn't realize how I much I was obsessed.
