"Les Mis" is like the Academy's concept of great PD 101. I honestly have no idea what people in this thread are on.

The issue with Anna Karenina winning PD is whether or not the Academy members have actually seen it.

That certainly is an issue, but then you see wins like The Duchess in Costume Design, which was not only less seen with less nominations but also had no prestige or built-in audience.

Some of the sets in Les Mis look fantastic, but some look very cramped and stage-y. For Anna Karenina though, a stage-y look is exactly what it should be (since that's the concept) and it works much better.

Yes they look stagey but I think that's what they were going for as well.

I mean, the Musain cafe is as stagey as it gets, and I'm sure it was done on purpose, to highlight the stagie-ness and artificiality of the film (you can feel that as well with some scenes like the rain falling on Javert at the beginning, it looks fake but it is supposed to), which, in my opinion, serves to drive the viewer into a "fake" world where people sing everything they talk.

I just took it as shitty vfx. Les Mis only had a 60 mill budget. Something had to be cut somewhere.
