Well, Meryl Streep won her third for The Iron Lady and Bergman won hers for Murder on the Orient Express. Silver Linings is far superior to both films, especially the former.
SLP is a very well-received movie, not just critically but commercially too, which is often a hard balance to hit. Maybe it won't be as revered by cinephiles as Raging Bull and Godfather pt 2 are, but it will probably be considered one of the heights of modern rom-com film. It seems like something that the public has really fallen in love with, and its big-name actors (especially JLaw, who is on the rise), only helps it to stay in people's minds. I think it's likely that the film is considered one of the best of its genre, especially in the context of the 21st century, so although it won't be considered in the same vein as Raging Bull by the "film community", I think it will be remembered as something of a beloved rom-com classic among the masses for a long while.
Dame Leo in shock,
I watched The Master this weekend and I cannot believe Hoffman is losing to these clowns. He is by far the best. A terrific performance. This is why I could never want to be a Harvey Weinstein. How do you look yourself in the mirror pushing a Robert Deniro performance in SLP at the expense of Hoffman in The Master? I could never do it.
Dame Leo received a nasty private message from Insufferable Douchebag Scott Feinberg that she discovered in her folder shortly after returning from my holiday after the 2013 awards season.. I called him an insufferable douchebag in a thread. He sent me: scottfburg scottfburg is offline

I don't think Gaslight, Anastasia, Kramer vs. Kramer, or Sophie's Choice are regarded as classic films. Or Terms of Endearment, As Good As It Gets, Morning Glory, or Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

Meryl on Oscars: Y’see these little babies? These are my best f***ing friends
and they never let me down. Try to get ‘em away from me and I’ll eat you alive.
Eh, I think SLP is pretty much As Good As It Gets 2.0.
I'm trying to rank these performances and it's surprisingly difficult, I love most of them. Haven't watched Lincoln yet though, so...
I'd say...
1. Waltz
2. Hoffman
3. De Niro
4. Arkin
Haven't seen The Master yet.
1. De Niro
2. Waltz
...
3. Jones
...
4. Arkin
Thought that De Niro and Waltz were great, Jones just good and Arkin totally forgettable.
ARE YOU READY, JESSICA?
Waltz
Hoffman
Jones
De Niro
Arkin
Dicaprio, was better than all of them.
Those of you who know the drill will know that for most categories, I will give a Should Win (SW) pick. For every category I will give a Will Win (WW) pick. And for those I feel qualified to make a judgment, I will make a Closest Threat (CT) pick for who I think could upset for the win. So here goes:
SW: ALAN ARKIN/Argo
WW: TOMMY LEE JONES/Lincoln
CT: CHRISTOPH WALTZ/Django Unchained
The most interesting thing about this category is that all five nominees have won the Oscar at least once already. This could be any of the five but I think Tommy Lee Jones has gotten the biggest acclaim for the scene-stealing Thaddeus Stevens. This film could have easily been Stevens' story and much as Lincoln's story. There's been some talk of Waltz upsetting but some are predicting the upset to come from Robert de Niro. I don't know. With Day-Lewis and Spielberg both poised to win a third Oscar, do you think they will want a third tripler in De Niro?
