This. A lot of people don't seem to realize that foreign art films are usually not very commercially successful in their home countries either. The highest grossing films are usually American and their home grown hits are usually not very High Art. Certainly they aren't the ones that are sent to art houses in the US.
I'm so curious to see how much money Spring Breakers will make domestically. It's time for Megan Ellison to make some cash off the bold choises she's made..
Didn't Ellison make a good deal of profit off Lawless and Zero Dark Thirty? The Master and Killing Me Softly whiffed, but she has had successes.
Well, and there's the assumption she's only partly in it for the money if at all. The Master was NEVER going to make money, it really took someone like Ellison willing to take a hit on it because they believed in it artistically.
Spring Breakers had a $2 million budget so I don't think Ellison will have any problem making her money back. This is going to outgross all of Korine's films combined!
I think Carell will be fine. Considering this also had Jim Carrey, I think it's going to be written off as not much more than a predestined flop of suckiness. He'll be fine. That said, I don't expect Foxcatcher to be much of a box office hit, but being a "comic-turned-serious" film it just needs good reviews probably to be a success.
There's been two pages of angry debate already, but I will point this out: H&G is the 7th highest-grossing movie of 2013 so far in the US, but internationally it's one of only two movies this year to pass $150 million (Soon Oz will be the third). On a larger scale, H&G ranks at #1,186 on the US all time domestic chart, but in international grosses it already ranks #335. The point being: measured relative to the grosses of movies in different parts of the world, H&G is a modest-for-January success, but outside the US it's been a straight-up major hit. If there somehow is a sequel it won't be because it made the most money in the US.
It'll be an interesting run to watch. This weekend's PTA was the 10th best of all time for a live-action film (The best since The Master, actually), and buzz seems high among younger audiences (It already had almost 370,000 fans on Facebook), but I imagine the actual product is going to be very alienating to mainstream audiences, and it will crash and burn after next week's expansion. Still, it should end up being profitable - I see a ~$3 million gross next weekend with a $6-8 million final total, and it looks like it'll be doing well overseas (It had a $2.1 million opening in France last weekend!). As Bean already said though ZDT has turned a profit (It cost only $42 million to make) and Lawless should break even, so I don't think we have to worry about Ellison closing shop for at least a couple years.

Spring Breakers' estimated theater cont for next weekend has been bumped from 600+ to 1,000+.Talk about confidence.

That article about Ellison's supposed falling out with Weinstein and "rebellious" temperament said Lawless made a lot of money for Weinstein and Ellison. BOM/Wikipedia shows a budget of $45 million with a worldwide gross of $53 million, though I have no idea how much it made on home release (does anyone release those numbers?)
There have been attempts at figuring out home release numbers, but most of them are apparently very inaccurate. But Lawless seems like the kind of movie that would do very well in rentals/VOD (Films that appeal to older men like westerns/period gangster flicks usually do). Do you have a link to that article?

Considering Korine has never even been an art house draw (Seriously, look at those grosses for his previous films), I'm guessing that's most of what's driving the success in NY and LA (Combined with the sex appeal of all the T&A on display through all the marketing). As I said earlier the actual film is probably going to be too weird for most mainstream audiences, so if they go wide as quickly as possible they can probably hope to get as many people out as possible before sour WOM gets out (I'll be shocked if the movie drops less than -60% the weekend after going wide). With 1,000+ theaters I could see $4-5 million and a $8-11 million total.
