DAVID BOWIE: First studio album in 10 years

    So excited about this:

    http://www.slicingupeyeballs.com/201...re-are-we-now/

Collaborating with Tony Visconti again, 14 tracks (plus 3 bonus tracks).

    video for first single:

Strangely downbeat for first appearance after a long absence, but it builds nicely.

    Fuck.
    Yeah.
    Let's celebrate.

This and Prince supposedly got a new album out too later this year, rest of '13 is looking good in the old farts still rockin' department.

This news stuns me considering Bowie "retired" after he got a heart attack on his last tour and decided to enjoy the good life. I must say I actually believed it to be permanent.

I wasn't able to watch/listen to that song at Bowie's site, but somebody uploaded it to YT.

EDIT - The tracking list for THE NEXT DAY.

    The Next Day
    Dirty Boys
    The Stars (Are Out Tonight)
    Love is Lost
    Where Are We Now?
    Valentine's Day
    If You Can See Me
    I'd Rather Be High
    Boss of Me
    Dancing Out in Space
    How Does the Grass Grow?
(You Will) Set the World on Fire
You Feel So Lonely You Could Die
    Heat
    So She (BONUS TRACK)
I'll Take You There (BONUS TRACK)
    Plan (BONUS TRACK)

Interesting that the album cover vandalizes the cover for HEROES.

Fans: "What's the artistic point of that?"
    Me: "Who cares?"

    Excited!

Subdued first song but I like it. Dirty Boys sounds like a song AD might like.

That was Bjork in the video. (And I feel stupid for not recognizing her until Dr. Funkenberry pointed that out on his blog.)

580,000+ hits on that music video at YT so far in less than 24 hours. Way to go Ziggy!

    Cover designers talk about this.

Why not a new image for the cover?

We wanted to do something different with it – very difficult in an area where everything has been done before – but we dare to think this is something new. Normally using an image from the past means, ‘recycle’ or ‘greatest hits’ but here we are referring to the title The Next Day. The “Heroes” cover obscured by the white square is about the spirit of great pop or rock music which is ‘of the moment’, forgetting or obliterating the past.

However, we all know that this is never quite the case, no matter how much we try, we cannot break free from the past. When you are creative, it manifests itself in every way – it seeps out in every new mark you make (particularly in the case of an artist like Bowie). It always looms large and people will judge you always in relation to your history, no matter how much you try to escape it. The obscuring of an image from the past is also about the wider human condition; we move on relentlessly in our lives to the next day, leaving the past because we have no choice but to.
    Why “Heroes”?

If you are going to subvert an album by David Bowie there are many to choose from but this is one of his most revered, it had to be an image that would really jar if it were subverted in some way and we thought “Heroes” worked best on all counts. Also the new album is very contemplative and the “Heroes” cover matched this mood. The song Where are we now? is a comparison between Berlin when the wall fell and Berlin today. Most people know of Bowie’s heritage in Berlin and we want people to think about the time when the original album was produced and now.

Heathen is one of my favorites of his whole career.

I enjoyed Reality a lot as well, but it wasn't as consistent.

Visconti says they've been working on/off on this album for 2 years. So the they were able to keep this a secret during that whole time in our day and age without a single leak or rumor is absolutely f'n impressive. Bowie's own office apparently didn't learn about the album until Christmas Eve.

Less than 2 days, the YT video has gotten almost 2 million views. I'm surprised when I read folks say they don't like the song. It's very radio friendly, if you're gonna break a decade long radio silence out of the blue with a single, this is a pretty good pick.

laying in bed high listening to Bowies new song. A moment of bliss I never thought Id have again. Listening to new bowie for the first time.
David Bowie sees back catalogue sales jump

Sales of David Bowie's previous albums have surged following the announcement of his new LP.

The singer, who released his first single in ten years - titled 'Where Are We Now?' - yesterday, has seen his hits collection The Best Of Bowie zoom up the download chart to number seven.

His new record The Next Day, which is out on March 12, is currently the top-selling album on iTunes on pre-orders alone. 'Where Are We Now?' is also number one on the singles tally.

"The thing with Bowie, as with any chart icon, is that when people are reminded of the brilliance of his music, they want to listen to it again," HMV's Gennaro Castaldo told The Independent.

"And alongside his original followers still enjoying his albums on CD and vinyl, his songs are now just a download away for a whole new internet generation of potential fans that are out there, so we can expect and explosion of interest in 2013."

The designer of Bowie's new album artwork Jonathan Barnbrook recently explained the unusual cover, adding: "It would have been clearer to many people if we had scribbled all over the cover but that didn't have the detachment of intent necessary to express the melancholy of the songs on the album."

I personally loved the single. Very nostalgic and heartfelt ode to one of my favorite cities in the world.

    I'm very excited about this!

ETA: I'm pretty sure the woman in the video is not Björk.

Yeah that was a mistake, it was actually the video director's wife. (And feel even dumber now. )

I posted this in the Billboard thread, but I'll repeat here: Initially they deemed it ineligible, but the UK Singles chart reversed course and is charting the single starting next week. Counting all the Internet downloads (tops in UK so far), there is a good chance (according to the media) that this actually could go #1.

No touring, no interviews, no TV performances, no public support at all. He's going Kubrick on this one.

Shit even Prince always does TV for his records/singles.

Speaking of him I find it strange that on the same day Bowie emerges from underneath the rock he was living under, Prince thru Twitter uploaded some free tracks...I'm sorry *cough* bootlegs stolen from his precious Vault by a hacker/thief *cough*. (Yeah sure dude, whatever.) Both guys not having any idea that the other would do this, or cared quite frankly even if they did.

It made for a very good, fun day for me.

Bowie's "Where Are We Now?" cracked the UK Singles chart at #6, his first UK Top 10 since "Jump They Say" 20 years ago. His highest charting single since "Absolute Beginners" (#2 in '86.) I was hoping for it to go #1, but still this is very damn impressive. I wished I was stoned and bet $100 last week that a new out of the blue Bowie single would make that chart. LOL.

    So he's now got UK Top 10 hits in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2010s.

I love Heathen too! It's easely a top 5er of his, for me. (after Low, Station to Station and Ziggy, on par with Scary Monsters, and edging out 1. Outside and Heroes due to the former's segues and the latter's sequence - "The Secret Life of Arabia" always seems so terribly misplaced for me. :X)

God, this has really became my most antecipated release of the year. The single is quietly devastating and that cover is BOLD. :drolls:

Also: that UK #6 is impressive to say the least! It shows some deep support for this return.

RS interviews Visconti and preview the tracks.

    http://www.rollingstone.com/music/ne...eview-20130115

Other details: Visconti says all together the Bowie sessions (started all the way back in November '10) produced 27 songs, or 10 songs that didn't make this album. 4 are fully produced and ready to be dropped. He says he fully expects him and Bowie to get back together later this year or next and "finish" that next album. He also says that Bowie has NO plans for touring or any other sort of public support for this album or any future records, but he "could" do a one-off show if he feels like it.
