Best Visual Effects- Post VES nominations

I feel pretty confident that Life of Pi, The Hobbit, The Avengers and Prometheus will make the final five, but I have no idea which film will be vying for that last spot. The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises were the only other films to receive a sole VES nomination.

According to various sources, reactions at the visual effects bakeoff screening were negative towards Cloud Atlas, John Carter, and The Hobbit, and reactions were surprisingly positive for Snow White and the Huntsman. This makes me wonder if the HFR exhibition of The Hobbit was so off-putting to voters that might be altogether dismissed. It would be reminiscent of that Tron: Legacy snub a couple of years ago.

    Please select 5 films!

Ugh, a Hobbit snub would be so .

I do indeed hope that Prometheus makes it in. Whatever one's position on the film, the effects work in it is phenomenal.

Add me to that. I am hoping against hope for a Cloud Atlas nod, though.

The man who leaves and the man who comes back are not the same.

I can't look at Marion now without thinking of Olivier rocking her world, if you know what I mean....

@AwardsDaily @kristapley I liked Cloud Atlas more than I expected to but good luck cutting a coherent bakeoff reel from that movie.

@AwardsDaily @kristapley Cloud Atlas reel showed a lot of Neo Seoul and random shots from the other stories. Seconds-long snippets.

@kristapley The special effects guys love it, but they're a minority. Smart presentations emphasize both. Then everybody's happy.

@kristapley TDKR was ok but I find that movie (incl the design of "The Bat" and other CG elements) doesn't hold up to close scrutiny.

@kristapley Prometheus had a gorgeous reel (and I HATED that movie). Skyfall good but thin - lots of great sfx, relatively little vfx.

@kristapley I was also surprised at the negative Hobbit chatter.

@kristapley Hobbit may have been 3rd, not 5th.

@kristapley Off the top of my head: Life of Pi, Avengers, Skyfall, TDKR, Hobbit, Spidey, Snow White, Cloud Atlas, John Carter, Prometheus,

@kristapley Re vfx bakeoff: Poor reel for John Carter, meh reel for Cloud Atlas, Snow White surprisingly strong. Lots of bad Hobbit chatter.

@rbredow The bakeoff isn't great for judging vfx & storytelling. That's why there are no 10-min bakeoff reels for acting or writing.
