Honestly they surprised me! I was clearly wrong about Cotillard. She's this year Tilda Swinton. I'm a little bit disappointed for her (Also for Hawks & Hunt) because I believe they deserved it but I'm very happy for Riva, Phoenix, Waltz & Django !

Snubs for nominated-everywhere Cotillard and Mirren, replaced by actresses whose films took directing noms from films nominated everywhere – Beasts & Amour. At least now people might stop saying “but she’s not Swinton” whenever discussing the possibility of someone who looks like a lock not making it in. And like I said sometime earlier, this makes all the nominees here 1st or 2nd-timers – which has happened before, but not with most of them being 2nd-timers. Also, I guess Cotillard can get #2 with James Gray next year?

Passion won out over precursors + previous Oscar wins.

I think it really helped Beasts that its star and director were basically the only viable breakout stars of the season. The other first-timers: 80-year-old, movie stars Cooper/Jackman, 70-year old who's been working since the 70s.

Ang Lee - The only 2x Bafta/DGA/Oscar-Winning Director!
Meryl on Oscars: Y’see these little babies? These are my best f***ing friends
and they never let me down. Try to get ‘em away from me and I’ll eat you alive.

Also, I think it helps when a film has more broad appeal, in a number of categories. Hitchcock and Rust and Bone never had that possibility.

It's not like Tilda really. The films were very different. But the main take away is just because someone has all precursors does not mean they are a lock. There are other factors such as passion, which many predicted would be the reason Wallis/Riva got in. Mirren was the filler nomination but the Brits were not enough to get her in.
