    Yeah.

The most telling win here is the PGA win with the preferential ballot. In my mind, that almost seals the deal. Argo can win with normal votes (get enough of a plurality to win) or with a ranked ballot as votes are redistributed.

And I don't see why an Argo/Spielberg split is that bizarre, personally.

I guess the idea being it'll be the second time that happens to him.

Of course it'd also be the 2nd time they do it to Ang Lee.

    Russel the winner?

People should stop comparing DMD with Argo. Beresford wasn't nominated for a Golden Globe or the DGA althought was the first film in winning PGA. Also Lincoln isn't Born on the 4th of July. Oliver Stone won the DGA and the film won a four Golden Globes that year.
And the comparisons with Apollo 13 aren't also very good because both Apollo 13 and Braveheart won a fair amount of Guild awards between the two. Apollo 13 won Picture (without nominees), Director, Sup Actor, sound, and Ensemble (first year awarded) and Braveheart won Editing, Cinematography, Writing and Sound editing. Also we must remember that in 1995 Guilds weren't that important while the Golden Globes were considered the most important precursor and Braveheart won director and Apollo 13 lost everything.

    Jali Awards Best Actress 1920-1925
1920 Tora Teje, Erotikon // 1921 Pola Negri, The wildcat
1922 Anna May Wong, The toll of the sea // 1923 Marion Davies, Little old New York
1924 Marie Prevost, The marriage circle // 1925 Gloria Swanson, Stage struck

Comparisons are fun though! Why, so serious, Jali?

Of course we know that every year is different, and no movie is another movie, but we also learn from the past and previous patterns, don't we? It doesn't hurt to look at history. We all know that records get broken and there's a first time for everything and all that, but scenarios also do get repeated as well.

And I think there is much to gleam from looking at movie types when they're pitted against each other and there are some eerie similarities in this contest to the ones in '89 and '95, so why not look at those years? It won't solve the rubicks cube puzzle that is this year, but it's interesting and entertaining nonetheless.

    Dame Leo rolls eyes,

    Russell Crowe ‏@russellcrowe
Voted Hugh Jackman as Best Actor for the Oscars. The character arc, the degree of difficulty, way more responsibility than any other nominee
This is why Julianne Moore has never won an Oscar

I am anxiously awaiting the latest Sasha meltdown over this, Crowe daring to think Jackman was better than DDL as Abe Lincoln!

Imagine if he announces he voted for Lawrence as well. Sasha's crusade against Noah would be towering.

It is a shame because the role of Valjean COULD have been an Oscar-winning role in the hands of the right actor/singer who could carry it and hit the notes. Just because you can sing broadway showtunes does NOT mean you can sing ANY role in any range - these parts for these musicals are written for certain types of singers and even though they can lower keys, they can't totally butcher the role as written and as Les Miz is like all sung, you can only adjust so much for singers who can't sing in the right key without ruining the artistic integrity of the show.

Crowe probably saw the movie and contrasted Jackman's performance with his own. No wonder he's impressed.

I agree, Blasty. I liked Jackman. I will defend a good portion of his performance, but he wasn't the perfect fit for the role. He was great in the opening leading up to Suddenly. Then he toils away with nothingness before emerging brilliantly at the end.

Not for another week. Hence why these other awards may or may not matter?

I know that, I was asking why Crowe was saying he had voted already.

I don't know, there's a reason why only 3 films have won Best Picture without a Director nomination. I think Wings and Grand Hotel can be thrown out. The Driving Miss Daisy comparison also doesn't quite work because that was truly a very a bizarre case. It was a film whose director was never really in the conversation, yet it was still the favorite to win pretty much the entire season. This isn't the case with Argo. Affleck was clearly and very shockingly snubbed. While the director's branch is small, missing with them is a big deal and I'm not sure why some people are playing this down. It's not like Argo missed some random tech nomination. Sometimes the AMPAS does it's own thing regardless of what the precursors say and the writing is usually on the wall. This reminds me of when Brokeback Mountain missed the editing nomination and people just played that off and missing with the directors is a much bigger deal.

Again, while I still think Argo can win and maybe it's even the favorite, but I can see why people doubt it.

LOL! Tapley said on his latest podcast that some AMPAS members have told him that they fell asleep while watching Lincoln. He said that they always say it with respect though, that they really want to see it as they respect Spielberg.

And Thompson said several AMPAS members have told her than they won't go with Argo because it lacks gravitas. I think no matter who wins is gonna do so with a lot of 4,5, and even 6 or 7 placements
