1939 (LOL, sorry, but it’s undeniable for me):

Actor: Clark Gable, Gone with the Wind

    * Whatever about who was responsible for what. GWTW is still, to me, the best directed film of the year. Yes, over Rules of the game, in which Renoir didn’t do anything he hadn’t done in Crime of Mr. Lange for instance. And if all those directors were able to keep the film homogeneous and in touch with what Selznick wanted, more credit to them. And I’m thisclose to giving supporting actor to Leslie Howard, but that would be a default winner (like Mitchell is to me) so I compensate Mitchell for not giving it to him in 1937 for The Hurricane.

You consider Garin Supporting? Interesting. I think of the movie as being about both of the boys being co-leads, with the movie being about how each of them respond to their father's coming back, with Lavronenko as Supporting.

Hmmm. Ivan Dobronravov is the clear lead, for the focus of the film is HIS acceptance of his father. Yes, his brother has to undergo a similar transition, but the film is less focused on that.

But both brothers are in practically every frame. The story begins and ends with both of them together. Though I do see your point that the emphasis is more on Ivan's acceptance. Garin would make my ballot either way, but not win.

Hm. Interesting. I have Dobronravov as the only lead and Garin and Lavronenko as supporting. I think the dramatic focus and point of view is always in the younger brother, with the older brother's evolution being in the background and only coming to the foreground by surprise in the last scenes. Also I disagree the boys are in practically every frame. Since the very beginning, it's about how Dobrionravov doesn't want to jump from the platform to the lake, and I don't think there's a single POV shot from Garin's eyes, but are plenty from Dovronravov's. There's also the moment in which he stubbornly gets out of the car and is left alone in the rain. Garin doesn't have a single moment for his own like that.

BTW, Dobronravov is my 2004 best actor winner if I go by US release date.
