Blasty, I really liked Salonga as Fantine in the 25th Anniversary Concert. (I think she might even be better than Hathaway?!) She brings a lot of interesting emotion into the role.

I just got that DVD in the mail! I'm curious about it. I have loved various selections I've heard on CD but the CD is not the same as the televised performance, some notable changes there. Some people on Amazon were upset the CD of the 25th Anniversary did not match the TV cast.

Yeah, I haven't heard great things about Lea Salonga in the most recent revival on here, sio...I won't watch those clips until I watch the whole concert special because I think sometimes it is easy to laugh at things out of context, so we'll have to see. But the one pic that I found of her from the special did look funny - I myself, made fun of her in one of the past threads for her expression, but again, perhaps in context...I'll give her a chance when I watch the special.
I have to say of the Eponines I've heard thus far here and there (haven't heard Barks yet), I must say I think I really admire the take of Frances Rufelle on it - Largo, you'd love her! She really knows how to 'die/sing' exceptionally well - I love her 'A Little Fall of Rain' - it's quite heartbreaking.
Largo hates Ruffelle's voice! or so I think. But I agree she's the best Eponine I've heard that you might have heard too. The best overall is the first one in Madrid, lol. And I'm seriously not being patriotic here, that voice was just...
I didn't care at all for Salonga in the 25th Anniversary concert. She still has a beautiful voice, but her mannerisms and, particularly, her facial expressions are completely over the top. She almost looks like she's playing Norma Desmond.
Ruffelle is not that bad, but I can see how her voice can be annoying and she's not my favorite Eponine. Not that I've heard many. I like her better than Barks in the concert though.
Was she any good as whore #2 in the movie?
The weirdest Eponine I've seen/heard must be Sutton Foster. I mean, I love her, but really that's not her role. She's way too old school Broadway and she's so tall. She towered over the entire cast.
LOL I didn't post it! But I am a fan of her rendition, but more the cast recording of it - that, I believe, is the Tony performance, I take it, of Evita. That version is, er, more over the top though, yes. Though Tim Rice's lyrics are kinda ridiculously difficult to say to that rhythm in her defense.
It's weird because I can both simultaneously enjoy Lupone's voice tremendously while also picking up what others hate about it. I just love broadway belters though, so I can forgive alot. And she certainly is fun to watch, albeit it here, perhaps more in a trainwreck way, I don't know, but she makes me smile. But then sometimes when I need to laugh I'll watch Catharine Zeta-Jones' Tony performance of Send in the Clowns, so perhaps I am a bit of a masochist! I can find something to love in just about anything I think!
LOL. I didn't say Salonga was the best thing since sliced bread!
I think Hathaway and Salonga both have some flaws, particularly when it comes to "I Dreamed a Dream". What I appreciated about Salonga's version is mostly the part, "He slept a summer by my side / He filled my days with endless wonder..." Hearing her voice, I really love how she uses that moment to make Fantine seem like a person who once had a lot of happiness in her life and that even in this dark moment she can pull back those memories and realize how far she's fallen.
(I don't really know what to say about the facial expressions -- I guess I would be more critical of them if it wasn't for the weird kind of performance she is giving. "Acting" in a film concert is a lot different than acting in a movie or even acting in a real stage production.)
Hathaway's version is a lot more...grim and you get the sense that she's just kind of giving up and is mad at the world for treating her so unkindly. Her version is a lot more cynical and angry. It still emotional, but in a much different way.
