Cloud Atlas for Best Adapted Screenplay
This is remarkable achievement in adaptation. The movie is absolutely nothing like the book except that it's exactly like the book. They took a critical analysis of the book and turned that into a movie. Accurately choosing the actors for each character based on the source material was an incredible challenge and I can't believe it worked. This is a screenplay that actually evolves the way movies are made (the same way the editing of Speed Racer was a new way to tell a story). Aside from those technical aspects, the screenplay delivers on the emotional level time and time again. The finale of any other movie happens every 15 minutes in this one. The writer's are always one step ahead of the audience, but don't leave them in the dust. Strongly FYC.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey for Best Adapted Screenplay
Another stupendous work in adaptation. This screenplay is better than the classic book. The writers determined that fans would want to see certain scenes in these movies so they did their due diligence and discovered that there really wasn't enough there. The characters, aside from Bilbo, aren't fleshed out. Motives aren't clear. The book is an nice fairy tale, but connecting each story together you would find that, if on screen, it would show its weaknesses. Giving the dwarves a reason aside from greed to get their treasure back was perfect. Inventing the pale orc since Smaug wasn't in the movie worked extremely well and brought depth to Thorin Oakenshield's character. Plus, everyone is given beautiful dialogue, which, if you haven't read the book you'd find that there's almost no dialogue written. This is, like Cloud Atlas, an original screenplay with the aid of source material rather than a slave to the source material.
