The best Christmas film. The Chinese Restaurant scene is one of my all-time favorites.
I watched a special the other night about where the cast is from the movie is now. Apparently the kid who gets his tongue stuck (yes, who later became a porn actor), runs a sports/movie memorabilia store in Santa Moncia (or somewhere near there). I might try riding my bike there one day.

I'll be that guy and say that this movie's appeal completely confounds and frustrates me. I just do not get it.
Watching this year I was struck by how much the father loves his family in very concrete ways that become embodied in Christmas, just as the film's fond nostalgia is. He's positively thrilled at the department store (dancing with the Oz folks!). He loves the tree. Obviously the turkey. But there's a real joy at the Christmas morning stuff and, of course, the BB gun. He is happier about the gift than Ralphie. Then of course he won't let the dogs ruin his Christmas. There's even the scene when Ralphie gets out to help him with the tire. He seems really touched for a moment when Ralphie says he's there to help (though obviously that goes to pot). I've always focused on the mom when watching, one of my favourite characters, but the father is just as loving in his own way.

It's a funny movie at the very base. The nostalgia is just an added bonus.

It's really the perfect mix of cynicism and schmaltz for Christmas. You can be touched by the mom covering for Ralphie after he gets in the fight and dad coming through with the Red Ryder air rifle, but it's all balanced out with "Son of a bitch!" Ovaltine disenchantment and the asshole Santa at the mall (even though I was always bitter that our mall Santas never came with a huge slide into fake snow).
This! Although, extremely funny with a fair dose of cynicism at the commercialization of the holiday, at its core is a loving family. It probably comes closest to the Christmases that I've experienced growing up. I even love the shot near the end of the mother & father sitting on the sofa together looking at the Christmas tree and the final shot of the house with the snow falling.
I think it's so good because their Christmas is a huge success despite being a large flop in so may ways. Which is more true for me than the usual "The true spirit of Chistmas rises above the hubbub which never works yay!" Here they don't overcome the bad stuff, their Christmas is fully a mix of the bad and good, because that's just Christmas. Less "in the end we have each other" and more "in the end we have this ridiculous mess and isn't that wonderful?" Thus no closing narration despite it seeming wholly expected. It's also one of the few movie that gets how Chistmas is really the build up not the actual trappings of the day.

I think the most interesting thing about ACS is that this was directed by Bob Clark, who's previous movies before this he shot were the first two PORKY'S movies.
And after this he shot RHINESTONE.
"Yes we need somebody that would know how to handle Sylvester Stallone singing. Hire that guy behind that A Christmas Tale or whatever it was called!"
