I used to think it has a chance to win... But only before seeing it.
I really hated the film. From the very first opening shots, it's obvious how orientalist the approach is and I found it sickening.
The girl's performance is very good, it's decently shot and all... But I found the film to be awfully shallow. It just makes us watch these "horrible" things that happen to a girl while saying absolutely nothing about it, with no purpose other than trying to manipulate our feelings.

I must accept that AMPAS may fall for it, enough to give a nomination (not the win, there's no way for that) but right now, I honestly don't see it happening.
The only factor working for its favor, imo, is that it's one of the two non-european films among the finalists. But even that shouldn't be enough.

    To me it's like this:

    1. Amour - LOCK
    2. Intouchables - LOCK
    3. A Royal Affair - Lush, great production values - VERY LIKELY
    4. Beyond the Hills - Mungiu is very well respected and this fits the more inaccessible "art house" mold, something like Dogtooth - LIKELY

And I have no idea about #5. I guess my gut would say 'Sister', since it's simple and subdued enough? 'War Witch' or 'Kon-Tiki' too. I just know The Deep/No will get lost due to lack of the passion the other candidates seem to ilicit.

It's basically a more respectable version of The Perfect Storm...

And it could make a surprise. Damn, how can I see this movie?!

I wanted to see War Witch the other day, but I realized I didn't have any English subtitles or access to internet, so I'll see it one of these days. I too would like to see The Deep only to see all of the films, which would be a first for me. There isn't even one year in history where I saw all of the FLF nominees.

I wish I could predict Beyond the Hills, one of the best films of the year, but I can't. The mediocre Sister and No probably have a better shot.
I know I've got a big ego, I really don't know why it's such a big deal, though.

All but The Deep and maybe No are availiable online.

Yeah I was unsure about that one since I saw it in the theatres and wasn't interested in seeing it again.

Are they available legally? I don't think so, so I'll skip.
