yeah but wasn't that also the last truely oscarbaity project that had Holocaust as a significant point of the story? and we know how that turned out. I think AMPAS' sentiments are still quite predictable when it comes to emotional subjects such as that or suffering mothers to bring the conversation back to Noémí.

There's something wrong with this signature.
Can you find that ONE mistake?

    The Impossible's opening day: $37,700 from 15 theaters, for a $2,513 PTA.

    WHAT A HIT.

Did anyone think The Impossible would actually be a hit? Lmao, it's marketing has been awful, or better, hasn't had any.

To be fair, this weekend is notoriously weak in general, so it will probably recover over the next week and a half.

That said, it should have had a much bigger head start than that. If it doesn't expand it's at at best a $20,000 PTA next weekend, which for 15 theaters is OK, but on par with Beasts, The Sessions and Hitchcock - basically, anything much over $10 million is a stretch ATM, unless it has epic WOM.

If you go to Iowa and say Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chatain, Naomi Watts....I can tell you people are going to know Naomi Watts before the other two...
As someone from Iowa, Jlaw is the biggest star of the three here. Naomi is no longer a house hold name. Middle America may be backwards but were not in 2005 still.

Here in Sweden, Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain and Naomi Watts are pretty much no-names all of them. Lawrence will definetly become a name soon though. A big one too. Chastain most likely not and Naomi's ship has sailed. They're all successful actresses though, obviously.

but this didn't have much promo, so was anyone really expecting it to be blockbuster hit in the US?

I think many of the Naomaniacs were. Perhaps they didn't realize that the marketing for this film has been essentially nonexistent.
