It's a revenge exploitation movie, a revisionistic fantasy. (And how many blaxploitation movies from back in the day would that first sentence apply to?)

It's QT remaking junk movies of his youth. Just with bigger budgets and better casts, and usually better than most of them.

I mean he's done his kung fu/martial arts girl power movie (KILL BILL), Jews (INGLORIOUS BASTERDS), and now African-Ameriacans (DU.)

I do find Lee and QT still continuing their feud since QT was in one of Spike's movies. I believe it was GIRL 6.
    Movies recently reviewed by RRA:

    Star Trek (2009)
    Pain & Gain (2013)
    Oblivion (2013)
    Jurassic Park III (2001)
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

The New RRA: Less Spam, still 100% ruining AD.

I love Tarantino, but I'll still take Lee's total filmography over his.

If Tarantino had put this film out as an accurate depiction of slavery then Lee would have had a point. But Django Unchained is not that type of film so his comments are off the mark. If Spike Lee wants to make that film then he should do it. But based on his recent track record he is better at attacking other directors than making a decent film himself. Its just like when he made thise stupid comments about eastwood war movie not having black people. The reason why lee is getting so much hate is because he did not even see the film. Tomorrow people will show Lee just how much his opinion means when the line up at the boxoffice.

Maybe Spike Lee should actually see the film.

But the whole point is that he's not going to see it? lol. I don't understand why he's being criticized for commenting on it without seeing the film when his comment was literally "I'm not going to see it." I know Spike Lee is a bit out there, disrespect to his ancestors and all, but are there some other comments he made about the film's quality that I missed?

He feels like if he sees it, he will disrespect his ancestors. So he's not going to see it. I don't get the big deal either frankly. Maybe he should see it, but he doesn't want too.

His statement is a political one: he could have just quietly chosen to not watch the film and left it at that. But he's a public figure who made a very public statement about how he's decided the content of a film is insulting without having watched it. So, he should expect some some measure of blowback about it.

All I saw was an implication that he found the premise insulting which I actually understand? I don't think that Tarantino would deny the film's blaxploitation roots and Spike Lee has always stood against that on principle.

He was asked a question, said he didn't want to answer it but left everyone else to their own devices. I don't see the problem. As usual, people take Spike way too seriously. I can't wait to see the film and Spike Lee's opinion on it will be the last thing I remember after leaving the theater.

    Vibe questioned him about it.

Oh, he was questioned separately outside his twitter rant?

Vibe asked him about it in an interview. Some people also asked him about it on twitter.

Here's the thing, the idea of watching a film that turns slavery into a Spaghetti Western with some funny moments would make some Blacks uneasy. I understand that. So I can't get mad at Spike for saying that, heck my brother feels the same way. Ava Duvernay also made some comments on it on twitter, but everyone is up in arms about what Spike said, Seriously?

Django is a hero's quest, rooted in mythology and facilitated by violence and revenge. The "spaghetti western" visuals are largely incidental, as far as I'm concerned.

It always makes me sad when people judge a work of art without experiencing it. Oh well, their prerogative, I suppose.

I agree, but what can you do The idea of the film is probably more controversial than the contents of the film.

Some people refused to see the Help (though that might've been in their favor).
Harry Lennix has called Lee Daniel's ""The Butler" Ni**erfield historical porn.
