This has been my thinking as well. The GG and SAG combined gave Smith 6 nominations for 3 different projects last week. No matter which way you slice it, that is very impressive and even more so for someone who's 77. She's absolutely everywhere right now, add to that the fact that she's a living legend, her film and role are very Oscar-friendly and this will very likely be their last chance to ever nominate her. Plus, she'll have both SAG and BAFTA nominations (which are the two main industry precursor's). All of that should be more than enough to secure her a nomination.

I believe if the Academy nominates Kidman this year for The Paperboy, it will serve as a ransom for the snub she got for To Die For (where her performance, btw, is much similar to the one in The Paperboy). I mean, Amy Adams reaped 3 nominations within 7 years, and Kidman reaped 3 Oscar nominations only after a decade of working in Hollywood. I do believe the Kidman backlash is truly over. She will now get the respect she truly deserves. NICOLE KIDMAN WILL BE NOMINATED AT THE 85TH ACADEMY AWARDS.

Okay but Kidman and ESPECIALLY Smith works longer then Adams. Call me if Adams will matter any less than any of them in a next... let's say 20, 30 years

What does that have to do with this years Oscar nominations though?

Amy Adams win Chicago; Anne Hathaway wins Indiana Film Journalist and Satellite. To me, despite the SAG snub, Adams is 3rd, after Hathaway and Field.

Because she won the Chicago film critics? What?

But she will probably not be present for any of these awards shows, and I don't know if that will hurt her in this day and age.
For someone like Smith, who's been around for so many years and is so crankishly likeable, I don't think it matters much. People can just shrug it off and go, "oh that Dame!"

Aw... I wish you could call me crankishly likeable. I've been around for so many years too!

And LMAO, Adams is clearly #1 after her Chicago win. She'll actually win. Ask Halle Berry, Charlize Theron or crash!

Adams won more precursors than Helen Hunt. Even though these critics group barely have got to do it with the Oscars, I've got the feeling that if is Kidman and Streep that they want to nominate, they could easily replace both Hunt and Adams.

I like Melissa Leo more as an actress and I think she did a fine job in the movie, but I agree with you that Amy Adams was much better. When I first watched it, I was sure she would win. So surprising to see people call her filler and assume she was in last place for a performance like that. She went completely against type and gave a great performance in my opinion.

This doesn't make any sense and is clearly just wishful thinking.

Kind of like everyone saying McCon was 2nd to Jones after his NYFCC win?

Adams was way better in The Fighter. But Leo should've won for Frozen River, imo.

Exactly. Not to mention that missing a SAG nomination is a bigger deal than any of this. It isn't like anyone is arguing that McConaughey is 2nd or 3rd now.

They need to remake this with Hayden Panetierre. They won't even have to change the cover.

We go through this year in and year out. At this point in the season, critics wins make very little difference (perhaps none at all?). The season is already oversaturated. Critics awards only truly matter at the very beginning of the season, when they can shape buzz. Once the televised awards, namely the SAG and GG, chime in, it's basically done. We already know critics like Adams in The Master, but the industry went for Kidman and Smith. Now, SAG can be wrong, but I just don't think these later critics awards tell us much.
