And I think there was another one nominated for more than one foreign language perf that we brought up at some point. Liv Ullmann? If so, shame on you and your avatar, Moviefreak.

ETA: yes, Liv Ullman, but that stops Marion for being that first: Face to Face wasn't nominated for Best Foreign Film. BUT, it was nominated for Best Director. Marion will be the first one whose film has no other nominations.
so you think Rust and Bone won't make it for Foreign Film? why?

Because France has selected The Intouchables, not Rust and Bone.

Because it just can't considering France (or shall I say Weinstein's friends in the French committee to be more accurate) submitted The Intouchables. Voilà!

Oh ok. That is a big blow to her chances. Apparently some critics from Dallas say they didn't even receive screeners for Rust and Bone. So maybe Sony hasn't been has aggressive as we all thought.

Why would Sony care about critics in Dallas when they should be worried about the 5k+ actors, directors, filmmakers in the Academy?

    Will Oscar have Riva Fever?

It's not a big blow. Her movie is simply ineligible for the best foreign film category. In that category countries submit just one film, and AMPAS mustch choos among those, not among all the foreign films of the year, but among the movie each country has chosen.

Amour, BTW, was chosen by Austria.

Marion hasn't been nominated for any critics awards save 2, so Sony Classics must have sent screeners for Amour, not Rust and Bone. Which is interesting because it seems at first glance they are focusing on Cotillard, maybe not. I think Fox Searchlight is focusing on Helen Mirren and not Quvenzhane

Are we really discussing Dallas critics when it comes to an Oscar nomination?

Dallas was the only group to nominate Maggie Gyllenhaal before she was nominated, so I take them seriously.

I wasn't really talking about Dallas critics just whether Sony sent out screeners to the members early enough. Or what effect, if any, would not being entered into foreign have on Cotillard's chances.

Screeners were obviously sent to SAG.

Sony has been concentrating on Amour because that's the film they're trying to get into best picture, director, etc, Marion has simply been more successful with the televised awards because she's been campaigning like crazy. Foxsearchlight is concentrating on Beasts of the Southern Wild as it's their best picture pony, Hitchcock doesn't have the reviews to be pushed anywhere else besides actress, so don't think it's getting a stronger push simply because Mirren showed up at the Globes and Wallis did not.

oh wow. Reese Witherspoon is campaigning for Naomi Watts -
    http://insidemovies.ew.com/2012/12/1...he-impossible/
Reese Witherspoon, who won the best actress award in 2006 for Walk the Line, shared with us a letter she wrote to Naomi Watts about her role in The Impossible, playing Maria Belon, a mother of three fighting for her family’s survival in the 2004 tsunami:

    Hi Naomi,
I know we don’t know each other well. I hope it’s ok that I am reaching out to you, because I simply could not contain my enthusiasm about your performance in The Impossible.
Wow. Just wow. I was blown away by the film. The story of survival and the incredible images of the tsunami and the performances of the entire cast were astounding. By far, one of the best films I have ever seen in my life. I could not speak for 24 hours after seeing the film. It was more than a movie. It was a mediation on life and family and humanity. It was fortifying.
But the life-breath of the film is you. Your brutal physical performance, the ferocity of your mothering spirit and the soul touching moments where you hold on to life with every part of your being were incredible. Not since I saw Meryl Streep’s performance in Sophie’s Choice have I been so moved by an actress’s performance. It also reminded me of Sally Field’s Norma Rae as well. Such strength and absolute vulnerability in the same performance. A mother who is determined to teach her child what it means to be a good person even when facing her own mortality. You showed every side of Maria’s story. If I have anything to do with it (and I will literally tap dance on Sunset Boulevard for you!), you will be holding every beautiful statue that exists by the end of February.
But more importantly, you have created a performance that will stand the test of time.
Congratulations. And thank you sharing your heart and soul so openly.

    With respect,

    Reese

The Impossible, based on a true family’s story and directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, opens on Dec. 21.
So far, Watts has been nominated as best actress by the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Golden Globes, and the Broadcast Film Critics Association.

    *lol*
If Watts starts "sweeping" the TV awards in Bullock style, I might believe it.
Otherwise she just has to wait for next year.
