I remember reading about how Perks was apparently a passion project for Watson who had a lot of meetings with people and used her Harry Potter celebrity to help get it made. So maybe there's some goodwill because of that? If the movie had made an impact on the Mean Girls level (or even Easy A, in this year), it might have carried her all the way to the Oscars, Albert Nobbs-style. I don't think she'll happen, but she's gotten more attention than someone like Kerry Washington (the Django guys are fighting category confusion but at least they're making appearances, while Washington has been invisible).

The Globes could be a mess in this category, I don't feel that anyone besides Hathaway and Field are safe. Watson, Kidman and Dench could be the final three which would be hilarious.

Dowd totally makes sense as a SAG nominee - long and hard working actress that against all odds gets into a spotlight with a small film. I guess she represents many members dream fanatasy. the only question is: was she seriously considered by them prior to her NBR win?

There's something wrong with this signature.
Can you find that ONE mistake?

Unfortunately, I don't see Ann Dowd going any further. Compliance's distributor sent out screeners with, like, 15 other films. In mid-October. Her film also made no money and is much more disturbing than, say, Frozen River or Animal Kingdom.

I'm just happy that she got the NBR prize and a BFCA nomination.

I am surprised they did not push Dowd in lead. One could make that case easily.

Emma Watson needs to happen, even if she's like 3rd best in show in the film (adn it'll be sort of a tragedy to see her getting in instead of Ezra and Logan - but a hot, desirable one nonetheless)

I so hope Judi Dench will make it in for Skyfall!
(*lol* Maybe not, but one can dream. I mean I'd lmfao if she gets an Oscar nomination while Knightley misses. )

It's ridiculous she's gotten this far! How the hell did she pull off that BFCA nomination? It gives me hope, since the final spot at SAG is emptayyy.

Honestly, the fact that she's actually in the conversation like this is shocking. This isn't some uncomfortable film starring an Oscar winner, this is like a total indie with complete unknowns about a very difficult subject that made like no money. If she actually gets a nomination, it would really be unprecedented. I still don't see it happening.

The Best Supporting Actress lineup at the 85th Academy Awards should look like this:
