There wasn't any way Keira was getting nominated at the GG last year (in retrospect), but that doesn't speak to her "star" power. Jolie was nominated in the Musical category for "The Tourist" which was much more wide open. On the other hand, Watts lost her GG spot for "21 Grams" to Cate Blanchett in "Veronica Guerin", and Scarlett Johansson for "Girl with a Pearl Earring", and then she lost a spot at "King Kong" to Maria Bello and Gwyneth Paltrow for "Proof".

Anyway, my point is...yeah maybe Watts has been overlooked and maybe the HFPA doesn't hate her...but Keira is definitely a big enough star to be a filler in a weaker year...she got two nods for P&P and Atonement.
Yup. They have to really love Riva/Wallis in order for both to make it, but because they want stars, i included Knightley. I didn't want to pick Watts but she has the narrative and she's well known enough to get in without much fuss. They can skip over Mirren if they wanted to and just go with chastain/cotillard/knightley/watts and then pick either Riva or Wallis.

I rewatched "King Kong" the other day. Watts is luminous as ever in it, but goddamn is it long winded, and this from someone who loves Rings.

21 Grams was something they didn't respond to well as a whole it wasn't just Naomi. I don't think it was a slight against Naomi more than it was an indicator that they just didn't like the movie.

And it's funny that you say Knightley had no chance to be Globe nominated when I remember a lot of people predicting it would happen. In both that one and The Dutchess, her co-stars were nominated over her which to me, is worse than the 21 Grams situation... They liked the movie and/or some of the performances, just not yours. LOL

Anyway, this year her films reviews are poor, she's coming off a string of huge bombs and she has no buzz. I don't see any rationale to predict her over Naomi unless you subscribe to the theory that her "star power" will carry her through. I don't.

Yeah, people were predicting her because some didn't think Swinton would happen or didn't want to believe that Close was happening for "Nobbs". Which is why I added, in parentheses (in retrospect). I think I might have even predicted Knightley last year, I don't remember. I'm just asserting that your statement that she's not "a big enough star to get nominated as filler" is not true. She could have last year (Viggo did), but there were no filler spots...everyone on that list was in contention for the Oscar (and Williams bumped Swinton).

I don't think Keira will be nominated this year...but again, this is another packed year in this category (Chastain, Cotillard, Riva, Wallis, Watts...plus Mirren and Lawrence for HG). So, again she can't be filler if the category's already packed lol. So your argument still doesn't make sense to me.

I'm so happy we're at the point where a bunch of us are starting to doubt Knightley even for the Golden Globes.

It's December and the contenders still include two French performances and a 9-year-old. Melancholia, why couldn't you have been a 2012 film?!

LOL I still can’t believe they didn’t try to do something to switch to comedy. Such easy nods over there for them. I name their drama placement the silliest awards move of the year from a studio. Last year it was Ruddin embargoing everything, lol.

As for the Globes, I have no idea.

I guess it’s Chastain, Wallis and Watts, and then what? Cotillard for the glamour and Riva for the prestige? Knightley for the glamour and Mirren just because she’s not foreign? Cotillard and Mirren? They’ve had obscure lineups before. In 1998 Montenegro, Blanchett (then a complete unknown) and Watson didn’t exactly scream “glamour!”. And I mean, the alternatives aren’t Streep and Sarandon, as they were in 1998. Mirren is not necessarily more famous than Cotillard, let alone than Knightley. I guess I’m sticking with Cotillard, that brings both prestige and glamour, and…

    1- Chastain
    2- Wallis
    3- Watts
    4- Cotillard
    5- Riva? Knightley? Mirren?

But she's one of two Oscar locks they have. They're not snubbing her.

I'm still surprised so many of you still see Wallis as a lock. She's far from that. Don't know about Globes, but Chastain, Watts are getting in, get over it.

poor Keira, BFCA was her last glimmer of hope...
