To be honest with you, I kind of forgot about the whole film entirely already and I saw it on Saturday. Upon initial viewing, I did think Lawrence was better, but thinking back on it now, I do prefer Cooper slightly. But, this is all negligible because neither of them nor the film itself should be anywhere near any awards.
I agree with Moviefreak, I knew going in that Lawrence had a smaller than lead role, but, based on the reviews, I though she'd be this whirlwind energy whenever she was on screen and steal the show. But she just didn't
1. Lawrence
2. Chastain
3. Wallis
4. Cotillard
5. Knightley
I wouldn't nominate either Lawrence or Cooper but I think Lawrence did a better job and the movie was more interesting when she was around.
I have read somewhere (here ?) Streep has refused to compagn this year ... I mean, even for the GG an 557ème nomination would be quite embarassing. We have all the impression she could be nominated at the Globes for reading a cookbook.
And I found Midler in some pronesticor's list, I thought it could be fun.
I can honestly see arguments for both Lead and Supporting with Jen. I wouldn't find it to be category fraud either way.
I think what impressed me most with her is that the character really is a pain in the ass at times. She can be cold and sharp, and I don't think Lawrence tried to go the cutesy route in those moments. Yeah, it goes overly sentimental rom com in the end, but I think throughout the film she was willing to go harsh in a way that goes against a lot of younger actors' instincts.
I'm new here but agree very strongly about Team Riva. Seriously, I know talk about Lawrence vs. Chastain dominates all over the internet but I really hope that Emmanuelle Riva makes a dent. She needs to be part of the conversation come awards time. Her performance in 'Amour' was so good that for a moment I felt like the film was a documentary. Riva's performance is eerily realistic and very deserving of recognition.
I'm new as well. Why are so many users convinced Wallis will score a Best Actress nom? She isn't even in an double-digit age. And they put Hailee Steinfeld in the supporting category despite her beeing the lead. I think it will happen with Wallis as well.
Is it June?
Well, Ellen Page was Juno. It was her movie 100%.
Jennifer Lawrence isn't even the main character in SLP. In fact, we don't know too much about her. Her husband died, she was sad and had sex with everyone (including women) in her office, got fired, and now she wants to enter a dance competition. Also, she's in love with Bradley Cooper, but OMG can't tell him. And she's kinda mean. LOL.
If she won, it would be such a Helen Hunt redux. People will HATE it in years to come.
There's a number of reasons why I think Jessica Chastain is in a better position, one of which is that she is undisputedly the lead of her film. Zero Dark Thirty is her movie, all 2 hours and 40 minutes of it. She's front and center.
LOL, I first thing I saw was the Hailee Steinfeld comment and I thought to myself, "Is it 2010?"
New York Times did a piece about the best actress/supporting actress contenders and Quvenzhane was featured along with Jennifer, Emmanuelle, Naomi, Marion and others.

It's really cool.
