Frankenweenie just won New York Film Critics. I think that it has Oscar in a walk. One of the best (if not THE best) reviewd animated movie this year, perhaps with weak box office.

This year is pathetic. Zero eligible films (so far) have a B average on Metacritic. Last year 2 just passed the mark. 2009 had 6 with 80+.
I think Wreck-It Ralph is a possible winner.
Ang Lee - The only 2x Bafta/DGA/Oscar-Winning Director!
Meryl on Oscars: Y’see these little babies? These are my best f***ing friends
and they never let me down. Try to get ‘em away from me and I’ll eat you alive.
It's like when Pixar loses it, everyone loses it
Frankenweenie has the prestige to win this, Wreck-It-Ralph doesn't really.
I know I've got a big ego, I really don't know why it's such a big deal, though.
Plus it'd be Burton's first Oscar.

It's so odd that Burton's gonna win with the lukewarm-ly received Frankenweenie when he couldn't win with the greatly received Corpse Bride and was thoroughly ignored with his (and Selick's) masterwork Nightmare Before Christmas! Like, LOL, both would be sweeping this year. Or poor Coraline.
I think Hotel Transylvania might get nommed because of Genndy Tartakovsky, he is crazy respected by the animators, also the snub of The Painting and the spread out noms for the GKIDS contenders at the ANNIES does not bode well for any of them

Why in the world would he vote The Hobbit in Best Animated Feature?!![]()
The Annie nominations clarified little in this race.
This is how I figure the running right now.
1. Wreck-It-Ralph- BP BD BW
2. Frankenweenie- BP BW These two will duke it out for the win.
3. Brave- BP BW
4. The Rabbi's Cat- BP BD The only GKids to get a Picture nomination at the Annies
5. Le Tableau- A Big question here. I don't think the Annies had seen it in time, but if they did see it in time for Annie nomination day then it probably won't get in the Oscars without scoring one nomination. This is a film that animators will love, its about their medium, so it would be hard for it to miss if they see it.
6. ParaNorman BP BD BW
7. Pirates! Band of Misfits- BP BW
8. Up from Poppy Hill- BW Only a writing nomination doesn't fare well for it. Ponyo's biggest nomination was for directing and it ended up not getting in the Oscars 5. We can't understimate love for Ghibli from the animators though.
9. Rise of the Guardians BP
10. Zarafa- BD Got a somewhat surprising directing nomination at the Annies.
11. Hotel Transyvlania- BP BD
All Gkids films that have been nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars (Secret of Kells, Chico and Rita, a Cat in Paris) have managed Best Picture nominations at the Annies, and only The Rabbi's Cat managed that this year. Le Tableau may have not been seen in time for the Annies and may get its Oscar qualifying release this month. If so, it could be a curveball.
BP= Annies Best Picture Nominee
BD= Annies Best Directing Nominee
BW= Annies Best Writing Nominee

I figured after the reviews for Frankenweenie came out the film basically died...like, nomination, sure, but the win was out of the question. The Wreck-It Ralph gets better reviews and actually delivers in a huge way and it's...LOSING TO FRANKENWEENIE?!?!?!

So it's on, Frankenweenie vs Wreck-It Ralph. Juding by the output of the critics circles at the moment, we could either be looking at our first traditionally animated* Oscar winner or another CGI winner making it seven in a row for the form of CGI. Either way, it's a win-win situation for Disney...
*If you can call Stop-motion animation a form of traditional animation.
I saw Rise of the Guardians today and its not nearly as bad as some are making it out to be. Its pretty entertaining and the animation is great. Its not on the same level as either Frankenweenie or Wreck-It-Ralph, but its not as bland as Puss N Boots or Kung Fu Panda 2, both which got nominated last year.
Um...Puss N Boots was awesome and far better than any of the Shrek movies it was spawned from.
I'm surprised The Secret World of Arrietty has done badly this award season especially with critics considering it's the best reviewed animated film this year, it should have at least shown up for their awards.
Personally, I enjoyed Poppy Hill more than Arietty. The latter had more imagination due to it being a fantasy, but the former was pretty much a perfectly executed snapshot of a particular time and place, with a story that surprisingly kept me guessing until the end.
I think those who were down on Miyazaki Jr.'s first effort will find much to admire here.
A shame it isn't genre enough to contend with the other titles floating around.
