Maybe if I knew him I would get the tone better, but read like that, it sounds like "Hey! A pop singer is casual about breaking the law! Unacceptable!", which is like, bullshit. The 50's already happened, when parents thought their kids would go to hell for listening to a music that talked about sex and casually breaking the law.

I mean, the entire thing is supposed to be a satire.

Delaney is, like, the most foul-mouthed and egregious comedian in the world. He's great.

Yeah I already guesses the guy is not a nanny, but that mustn't be one of his highest points still, no? No matter how cool you truly are, attacking a pop song for being casual about breaking the law is still very, very, very silly.

I think the point is more that the song is casual about, well, everything. Things that a normal person shouldn't be cavalier about - you mentioned breaking the law, but there's a warrant out for her arrest, the singer is unsure if she's been beaten up/raped/had consensual sex, she's likely going to lose her jobs considering her activities, etc. It's the casual nature itself that Delaney is decrying here.

Again, it's supposed to just be a one. Rob Delaney couldn't care less about what Katy Perry does or what her songs say. He's just making fun of her terrible, asinine lyrics.

I wasn't aware people actually listened to Katy Perry lyrics, much less take them seriously.

I mean, I absolutely love this track, but the lyrics haven't turned me into a homicidal maniac in the 20 years that I have been listening to it.

The Delaney piece is satire-as-social-commentary (and also hilarious, which is justification for its existence in of itself,) not some puritan screed about the brain-rotting effects of pop music. How disposable/inconsequential Katy Perry is is part of the joke, which is sort of obvious. And frankly re-contextualizing truly awful lyrics into something that's faux-serious is often a really funny thing people do (you were around during the whole "Friday" thing, right?) If Jimmy Fallon dressed up as Neil Young and sang the lyrics of "Mind of a Lunatic" to the tune of "Comes a Time," I'd probably laugh.

And, like, I don't know what the Geto Boys example is supposed to show? You're an adult, you can listen to music with crazy lyrics if you want. But I doubt anyone's giving them awards for having peaceful messages or claiming that its anything other than what it is. If a person wants to use those lyrics as a springboard to write about why cop killing typically isn't the best life choice, go ahead. It'll probably be a pretty short piece and no one will read it because it won't be contentious or funny. The pervasive nature of rape culture IS a conversation worth having, and putting it into context of something that's goofy, not serious, and laughed/shrugged off is exactly the point. If I had a kid I wouldn't stop them from listening to music like that, but it would absolutely be my responsibility to talk through the lyrics with them first. Which is all this is, it's pointing out crazy shit in pop culture that would otherwise pass by innocuously and saying, "Hey, that's crazy." Which it is.

And I'd argue that a man writing a hilarious comedy bit featuring, like, 40 rape jokes and walking away being praised by feminists for it is a feat itself. And also, it's not the 80s. Rap artists who try that shit nowadays are typically morons (see, for example: The Game.)

(Also, I agree that Delaney's twitter feed can get a bit much at times, but his stand-up is pretty on point, at least when I saw him.)

Blame the people responsible for giving her the award, not Perry herself.

We do not live in some either/or world where one is either a puritan from the 50s who wants to G-rate music, and who thinks rap songs turn kids into murderers, or someone who has to be a pure relativist and can't be repulsed by the idea of "Ur So Gay" being peddled to kids as pop music. The effort to take the word "faggot" out of rap music is a good thing, you know. We don't have to be puritans or advocates of censorship in order to point out that something is offensive.

No, but it seems that a lot of people (you included) hate Katy Perry even more because she has won this award. As if she can help it.

I don't hate her more because she won this award (I don't think I can hate her any more than I already do actually!). I just find the fact that she won this award awfully stupid.

I'm a little incredulous over it, and on most days I'd rather just ignore her existence, but I certainly didn't invent any of these opinions yesterday. I mean, it's easy to go out there and find inconsequential nobodies who are saying crazy things. We typically only talk about them when they become of note.

Well, the good news is that today Katy Perry was nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance.... the bad news is that it was for "Wide Awake," and (the much superior) "Part of Me" was completely overlooked..

Pretty every single one of her fellow nominees is so much better. Yes, even Rihanna whose "Where Have You Been" is my second favourite track off Talk That Talk, after "We Found Love".

Which is unfortunate because otherwise, she actually looks quite pretty.
