I dreamed a very different dream...
Maybe Anne Hathaway will be a Cruz like survivor of a musicals critical meltdown. The reviews have to get so much better and more enthusiastic. The eberts and daily news and NY post and all the bfca people maybe. Seems almost impossible to repeat Chicago success.

LES MISERABLES (Hooper, 2012): I had a dreeeaaam this film would be / so different from this hell I'm watchiiiiiiiiiiing

McT is strangely silent during all of this . . . .
Yeah, I'm confident that Hathaway will still win, especially because she doesn't have particularly strong competition.
But, with the Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and Slant already proving to be lukewarm or downright negative, I don't think this film will be quite the juggernaut most of us were anticipating. I think 4 acting nominees is quickly becoming unlikely. I think Dreamgirls is actually a very apt comparison.
He hasn't been on AD today.
I must have a very bad memory. I though Dreamgirls received fairly stellar reviews, just not OMG raves and it missed out on BP which was a surprise.
To be fair, I'm not sure how many of us were still predicting this to actually win Best Picture up until today. It really seemed like most people had thrown their weight behind Argo or Lincoln and now Zero Dark Thirty after this week. Obviously, things are always up in the air until reviews come out (and still a bit up in the air after that), but I got the impression here that the Les Mis/Hooper win prediction died before today.
That said, the consensus was definitely that this would pick up tons of nominations. And now this could easily walk away with a single digit nomination count. I figure Picture, Director, Supporting Actress, Production Design, Costume Design, Sound Mixing, and Song are all still within its grasp. Sound Editing and other acting nods aren't out of the question either, but it's especially funny that we've been debating whether or not Crowe can get in and now we're thinking Jackman misses a nod altogether as well.
Not really. Like Les Mis, I think many expected it to be a complete juggernaut, with Jennifer Hudson easily picking up Supp. Actress. Then the reviews came in which were much more tepid than expected. It wasn't entirely surprising that it got snubbed from Best Picture, but it was likely in 6th or 7th place.
And, of course, Jennifer Hudson still easily picked up Supp. Actress.
Also, I hope McTeague isn't throwing himself into a river over these reviews.![]()
"This is not your daddy's HBO version of Mandela," said Weinstein. "This is the kickass version of Mandela."
It has a 76 on Metacritic, which is probably about where Les Mis is headed (perhaps Les Mis will go a bit lower?). Although we have 3 negative reviews from 3 big trades, there are going to be some 100s for this, definitely -- it will likely be polarizing, but it'll have more good reviews than bad.
Oh, and Day-Lewis is winning Best Actor in a walk (but was anyone still doubting?)
If McTeague doesn't log in by the end of the day everybody better start getting worried.
