I'm in the minority here, but Anne looked over the top in that scene

Ugh, Hugh's and Russell's singing doesn't really seem to go together. Some of my favorites scenes on stage are between them so I better lower my expectations and not to expect anything amazing.

I wish they had relied on Hugh and Anne being big enough draws and got some Broadway talent for Javert's role, but I guess Universal wanted to use Crowe for attracting more male audience.

I can't believe how well received Hathaway is. I'm glad.

It also looks like I may have to concede a days ban to McT but if this is good...it's worth it!

I really think this might be why Hugh's reviews aren't rapturous. For Valjean to hit it out of the park, he HAS to have a strong Javert to play off of. So many of his most dramatic moments are confrontations between the two.

seyfried too vibrato-ish, but I guess for Cosette it works.

Sam Barks...shes good, but she isnt Anne! Wow ANNE!!! Ughh I cant stand it! She will win and she will be glorious!

Redmayne is great, and I can see him easily beating Crowe to the nomination.

Jackman is a default nominee, but I can see why people are not totally raving him. I mean he is semi over doing it.

Those clips are great. Anne Hathaway is so winning. The only thing bothering me is how close the camera work is. For those who've seen it, were you bothered by the camera angles and the intense close-ups?

its a usual thing that Hooper likes to do. I'm also having trouble loving it with this, I tolerated it with Kings Speech and Elizabeth I on HBO, but I get a feeling that Hooper is overdoing it here.

Also after re-watching the clip with Crowe. LOL. Sorry Crazyfits, I know I was defending him for a nomination, but I cringed at this clip! Please dont be mad at me.

They had to do close-ups because they were doing live singing; it's not like other musicals were it's pre-recorded and the actors simply mime the songs during the scenes.

Ugh, I am going to go nuts over this film.

I can't remember the last time so many films hit it out of the park going into Oscar season. I'm loving almost all the contenders, and I imagine I'll be overjoyed no matter what the results on Oscar night.

This makes...no sense. You can live sing a wide angle. They're still miked when live singing. They're not live singing in the theatre. They don't appear in your house every time you watch the YouTube clip. It is ultimately recorded.

But is it really like that throughout the whole movie? I didn't really mind it in The King's Speech or notice it all but the close-ups from the clips of this movie make it look so claustrophobic. The good thing about the close-ups is you can clearly see the emotions on the faces of the actors and ranking from those clips...

EDIT - I didn't see the Who Am I clip.

    1. Hathaway (singing and acting - no competition at all)
    2. Barks (best singer)
    3. Redmayne
    4. Seyfried (I feel iffy about her, I liked it but Redmayne just overshadowed her in the clip)
    5. Crowe (He's trying but that voice is not just not up to par with everyone else in the cast)
    6. Jackman (Wth. I was expecting much better from him. It's a clip but that was not singing)

Crowe is way better than Jackmans non-sing of Who Am I. The Who Am I clip gives me a great deal of fear. A movie with that shitty half sing for three hours would be unbearable. Thankfully the rest of the cast, Crowe included, are much better. It's just a pity Who Am I is s awful in this movie. One of the best songs in the score. Should've been a showpiece. Instead we have awful half singing and horrifically amateur shooting and cutting.

I'm starting to understand why Jackman isn't getting that much love.

Yeah, I'm not crazy about Jackman's choices in that clip of Who Am I (particularly in not singing the final line), but I'm not going to make any judgments until I see the full film. I do think his acting in the clip is superb.

I'm pretty pleased overall with the singing - enough that I can tell I'll be head over heals in love with this movie. Even Crowe, who I expect will get a fair amount of criticism, does a pretty good job I feel. This may end up being the first time I actually skip out of the house on Christmas Day to see a movie. There's no possible way I'll be able to wait.

"Who Am I" is used in various ways throughout - Valjean & God, basically. Agree about the clip

Once again, sung dialogue is "ricitatif".

C'est pas notre faute. It's not our fault.

Did Cohen take a cinematography course between "The King's Speech" and "Les Mis?" Because the cinematography actually looks good.

The clips look great from an acting, musical and technical perspective.
