WOW. Looks like i missed all the "fun". I haven't seen TDBS, but Weisz was the smartest (after Field) and most charming person at the THR roundtable, i hope she makes it.

Though, this win kinda hurts Chastain, no? She couldn't win here despite her movie being being the winner.

I don't really think so. In reading about the actual results, Lawrence and Chastain were tied throughout the voting, but because they were splitting the votes, it allowed another contender to surpass both. I think ZDT performing really well at NYFCC only helps Chastain -- it helps boost up her film, which in turn, helps her. NYFCC likes to spread the love, so the fact that they gave Best Actress to a rather unexpected choice -- who has no chance of winning -- I don't think hurts Chastain at all, really. If anything, I actually think Lawrence was taken down a peg, as she was expected to win this, but didn't.

This definitely helps Weisz, if only cause a few more members of the Academy may be be willing to give a chance to her movie and watch the screener. Any exposure she can get is great news.

I think this puts her in contention, although still seems like a long shot.

This really only helps Rachel, she was not in the conversation for the whole year basically but now that she won something she will get noticed by some voters. Probably won't take her to the Oscars but it can take her to the Globes or SAG.

Just an FYI to everyone, when BDP made that post a week ago about kinder discussions, this is the kind of post that we have an issue with. And judging from steandric's posting history he's had it out for JLaw for a while, and said general warning didn't seem to resonate with him.

So, enjoy your one-week ban steandric!

Well done. That's a terrible post after or before BDP's post/warning.

I don't think it hurts Oscar Winner JLaw. Plenty of performances have gotten nothing at all from the critics and then swept the industry awards. People here thinking she would win one award that she didn't doesn't hurt her chances.

I really don't expect Chastain to win at all. She's still in my mind a considerable underdog against Lawrence. If anything, I think an insurgent, unexpected candidate is likelier than Chastain.

Like Riva? I really think the critics can push her to the top.

I think if anyone could beat JLaw or Chastain, it'd be Riva. (Who I'm now including in my top 5)

Oh, i already had her there, and she deserves to be in the top 5 but this Cotillard campaigning is making me nervous. I'm just not seeing the major support for Cotillard that other places are (goldderby). Maybe they know something i don't but Amour is going to sweep the foreign category as well as places on top 10 films of 2012. I'm don't see where Cotillard/Rust&Bone fits in the grand scheme of things.

This review was just added to RT.

Ok. Don't say this is not a rave for Jessica Chastain! I'm using the word "rave" correctly this time.

By looking at these events through Maya's eyes, we see the struggle from her perspective and come to admire her as a truly extraordinary individual. Jessica Chastain will win the Best Actress Oscar with her performance in this film. Maya is one of the finest female characters we've seen on screen period. She's not defined by men or sexuality, but is ostensibly the girl in a cruel male world. Maya is so intelligent, so fiercely committed, she inspires those around her. Jessica Chastain is fantastic as Maya. She carries Zero Dark Thirty more than any other lead character has in a film this year. Kathryn Bigelow picked a gem to give life to an amazing woman that continues her work in the shadows.
    ...
It is one of the best films of the year and the finest performance we've seen from Jessica Chastain so far.

I'm starting to see a scenario where Riva will win the Globes (foreign, loved and overdue - those HFPA members are going to love to see her accepting their award) and if she's there to deliver a speech (I PRAY she's able to) that could be almost everything she needs to win the Oscar. And look: if she wins the Globe, given the love the SAG has for the elderly (and the fact ALL the older members know and admire her), she could also win there.

    NONE of this is happening.

Please tell me who ALL of the older members SAG are that know who Emmanuelle Riva is.
