I’ve looked up in Metacritic and Exotic Marigold Hotel is at 62. So, in the end, all these movies we’re trying to look for so that we have a more starry choice than Emmanuelle Riva simply aren’t really that much. Margiold 62, Hitchcock 56… I really wonder if Keira has more chances than we thought? I mean, her movie has more buzz than Marigold or Hitchcock, it also has better reviews, and Knightley’s performance has been more individually praised than at least Dench’s. Yes, she doesn’t have the clout of Mirren and Dench, but I think the timing and the buzz and the reviews are overall stronger, plus she’s more of a star and a famous face.

I mean, even Streep in Hope Springs has more going for her than Dench and Mirren… Will, in the end, Streep come back, lol? Or, maybe, as my primo says, we’re in for a Maggie Smith resurgence with Quartet (reviews for Quartet, after all, are better than for Hitchcock and Marigold!).

I wonder who are “famous face” will be. It could be Cotillard as far as famous faces go, but her film is certainly obscure, and if we’re looking for a middlebrow AMPAS choice I don’t think R&B fits the mold.

So, even though I’m predicting Riva, I think the alternates would be one of the middlebrows, and I think the order would be something like Knightley, Smith, Dench Mirren and Streep.

Doesn't Jennifer "Hunger Games" Lawrence already fit that mold?

And yeah, I've been pondering a Smith reemergence myself. I do wonder if she might be coming out too late still, but she's also Harvey's only not-locked contender in this race, which could make her a little more important than we currently figure.

I think Smith isn't happening. Dench, Mirren or Streep could happen. I'm still banking on Cotillard getting passion votes and making it in. I think Riva is pretty much a lock at this point.

    This year is crazy.

    Right now, I'm still thinking:

    Chastain
    Cotillard
    Lawrence
    Riva
    Watts

Oh since when is the perpetually underestimated Ms. Watts suddenly becoming overestimated? It must be a joke, haha!

Keira Knightley makes sense if we take in consideration that almost every year there is an actress that AD at large dismisses because they don't want it to happen (Blanchett 07, Theron and Dench 05, Jolie, Bullock, Mirren 09, etc, etc).

    Jali Awards Best Actress 1920-1925
1920 Tora Teje, Erotikon // 1921 Pola Negri, The wildcat
1922 Anna May Wong, The toll of the sea // 1923 Marion Davies, Little old New York
1924 Marie Prevost, The marriage circle // 1925 Gloria Swanson, Stage struck

I feel like Watts may fill that AD-hate slot this year though.

I know I'm bringing up semantics but I think it's justified. You can say they aren't extrremely well received but you can't say they aren't much until you see them for yourself. Movies can be underrapreciated and that hapens all the time. There is also something to be said about certain genres routinely being underrespected. Creating a consensus around movies by and for people don't see them is really not unlike favoring starry performers to non-starry ones. I know that's probably not your intention, just something I wanted to bring up.

lol, The Impossible missing out on VFX isn't that big of a deal. So the VFX people didn't like it? They're not the people voting for the acting.

True. I don't think that snub hurts Watts in the slightest.

True, true, I omnly meant that they're not all that in terms of their awards chances, not of its quality that I'm not judging.

    .
Well I would usually get shot down in flames for daring to suggest something along these lines, but actually Keira is an A-list star, and the line up this year is lacking a little in stars.

Besides Lawrence, Keira would potentially be the biggest star in the line-up.

having said all of this, I still refuse to put her in my predictions unless she somehow manages to snag a SAG nom, which seems pretty unlikely....

Also - having seen Chastain's ZD30 clip today I now have her as No. 1 and favourite for the oscar...the Academy will eat that type of performance up.

    1. Chastain
    2. Lawrence
    3. Wallis
    4. Watts

    5. somebody else...

Keira Knightley is definitely more famous than Jennifer Lawrence, let alone Chastain. Like, everybody knows Keira. Of course she is an A-lister.
