I know I'm the last person that should be speaking on the topic, but honestly I'm surprised there wasn't a bigger uproar over what James Gunn wrote. Sounds the sort of thing Deadline or any other mainstream entertainment reporting blog/website would lap up, a director of an upcoming big budget studio blockbuster saying some things a studio surely doesn't want their director to be saying publicly. Trust me if they or Deadline or somebody up in the food chain had, I could easily see Marvel (and especailly Disney) forcing Gunn to quit. Or fire him outright.
I don't know why it sort of died as it did after Gunn quickly took those words he wrote down (by Marvel's insistence, I'm sure.) Maybe as Dent and others mentioned in the old thread, its the comic book/Internet base being so unfazed by what he wrote? Maybe its because Gunn is a notorious troll who likes to get a rise out of people by saying "controversial" things, which does explain his background with Troma back in the day, and people just waved it off as such? (This was the same guy who once tweeted that he liked Hallmark stores because they were a nice warm, private place to masturbate.)I don't know?

Well, they're not starting small, that's for damn sure. Though seeing the Justice League go up against Darkseid in the same year that the Avengers go up against Thanos is, as that article points out, somewhat ironic, given that Thanos started as Jim Starlin trying to create his own Darkseid.
Forgetting about AVENGERS, Darkseid is a perfect adversary for this sort of thing. I do hate that it might feel anticlimatic after AVENGERS and Thanos, but shit happens.
Honestly in a just world where we had a consistently good Superman movie series and not just end before Richard Pryor, Darkseid would've been the ultimate adversary for Superman. Not just in strength and power, but in thematic contrasts.

Honestly, though, while Darkseid is THE ultimate DC villain...yeah, he's the ultimate DC villain. Where the fuck do you go after Darkseid? They probably could've just figured out ways to lengthen the original JL pilot with the White Martians to 2-hour feature length and called it a day.

Oh he'll show up as a real character in GOTG (right?), but I do see him as the villain in AVENGERS 3 with him playing his background part through Phase 2 and maybe even Phase 3. That is if we accept the thinking that we're getting the Infinity gems. We got the mind gem in AVENGERS, THOR 2 is rumored to include one as a plot device, and so forth. Then A3 would be when Thanos gets all those stones for the Gauntlet?
I don't know if that'll be the case, or if its even a good idea. God knows that would be very impressive if they could actually pull that long set-up into summer 2018 through many movies.
Or how about just using Brainiac? True he's a Superman villain, but he's simple who writes himself. An alien A.I. that wants to know all about Earth then destroy it. And well that's good enough motivation for the protagonists. Not to mention the other reasons for the conflict, whether because Brainiac destroyed Krypton as TAS had him (thus revenge for Supes) or maybe add in he also destroyed Martin Manhuntter's Mars. Or whatever.
Personally I've always been fond of Darkseid and Apokolips and all that. I wonder if they'll actually do Granny? (Nevermind Mr. Miracle and Orion and all that New Gods shit.)
In a perfect world a JL movie would be a homage to 1950's sci-fi and, yes, it would include a giant intergalactic starfish.

You know speaking of AVENGERS sequels, I'm surprised that after allegedly Marvel got the rights back to him, Namor hasn't been discussed more as a villain possibility. Sure he's more known as a Fantastic Four adversary, but he's another baddie that writes himself: King of Atlantis, declares war on the surface lands because they keep polluting the oceans his backyard, and he's pissed. A political terrorist, if righteous in cause if not in his response. I can see that trailer making good use out of his tsunamis overwhelming Shanghai or the U.S. Navy. A villain not from outer space, but terrestrial.
(Hell with the Sub-Mariner's background fighting in WW2, you can tie-in that personal element with Captain America. Former allies, now enemies.)
Namor probably has the same problems that Wonder Woman or Aquaman have when talking about screen possibilities: there's a whole mythology you need to explain for him to work, and that's not easy to do in a 2 hour movie (especially if the character is a supporting player/villain).
Of course I really liked what Marvel did with Thor and his mythology, and they had the balls to go with frost giants and sparkly rainbow portals to other dimensions with very minor explaining, but in that case the background in Norse mythology is much more familiar to audiences (if only because of its influence on fantasy) while I think modern day amazons or a submarine kingdom would require some major and expertly done world-building to work. Which makes me a little worried about Wonder Woman and possibly Aquaman being in a big team movie like JL to be honest.
It's funny because general audiences are much more open to take aliens at face value, but something terrestrial needs more suspension of disbelief.

I ask because right now, Warner Bros. is setting itself up for a fall. They are making choices that look from the outside to be made out of a kind of corporate fear instead of setting the stage for themselves in a way that will both excite fans and invite in new viewers. They are dealing with several different factors that seem to be causing this potentially-costly poor decision making, and they need to carefully consider what they're doing before they commit to things.

Dent, am I the only one online who actually would've liked to see a NEW GODS movie but without the JL or any of that? I like to think that whole saga of Darkseid and his adversary (and son) Orion, Mister Miracle the ultimate escape artist and former Darkseid enforcer Big Barda, the Anti-Life equation, all that Fourth World so forth would make for a terrific, ambitious space opera series.
Hell I almost would rather have that than a GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY movie, and you know how I'm down for Rocket Raccoon and Groot on the big screen.
Anyway, I hope this works. If you know, JL actually gets produced.
