Not exactly while The Avengers VFX is pretty impressive(edit) I can't help but feel in a competitive year, like this, they could easily snub The Avengers in favor of Impossible, Life of Pi, The Hobbit, Prometheus, The Dark Knight Rises, and even Cloud Atlas. The Academy seems less recepto VFX heavy action films such as the subbs of "surefire" best VFX heavy films such as Star Wars Episode III and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen even The Golden Compass upset the first Transformers in Best VFX that year.

I was throughly impressed by prometeus. The work is not overly done and it's pretty much flawless (well, except the blue aliens anyway). Hopefully it'll get in.
I don't care about any of the rest, though Life of Pi seems nice to look at?
I think the Avengers effects are mostly pretty good. I certainly wouldn't call them terrible, though some of it is a bit spotty and I definitely wouldn't give it a win. The helicarrier action sequence has some pretty gigantic stuff going on and the big battle in New York has those convincing alien ships and all sorts of expensive carnage on display. The Chitauri aliens have some cheesy shots, certainly, and they're not all too creatively designed anyway. That virtual camera-assisted shot that covers a bunch of ground showing each Avenger participating in the battle is cool in concept, but certainly a little hokey in execution.
So there's some good and some bad. For me, the Hulk is the ultimate effects success of the movie, the thing that pushes the whole effects experience into overall positive territory. Even though he's still clearly a pile of pixels, it's easily the best the big green guy has ever looked onscreen and his smashing sequences are excitingly executed.
I'm hoping I get to use that line a lot this year.
Yeah, I'd be happy if Washington is basically the only nomination the film gets. I don't hate it like some people here, but it's tonally disjointed, and the last five minutes or so are pretty awful.
I can't believe Skyfall made the cut. The helicopters in the last scene and the explosion at MI6 were horribly executed effects.

I agree with Au and City L., the effects in The Avengers were really disappointing for the huge movie it was. The alien creatures at the end were not well-made and you could totally tell the use of green screen in many parts.

As far as I'm concerned, The Avengers might very well have the greatest VFX ever put on film (or was it shot digitally LOL).
Most of the end battle was done with the actors and some of the pavement and props inside a huge green screen set. The collapsing buildings, the sky, the creatures and debris were all added later. It's imperceptible. And it is perfect.
The flying carrier thing was also incredibly complex and photo-realistic.
Yeah, I don't get this 'Avengers had bad CGI' thing at all.
