LOL, be prepared to read LOOOOOOOOOOONG chapters detailing battles, history events, the rules of a nunnery and some other things that have NOTHING AT ALL to do with the plot. It's great, but go with an open mind to read about many other things that are not Jean Valjean or Fantine!

You warned me...but I know that it's time. I have been in love with this story, this stage musical for far too long. It is time that I dedicate the year to reading this novel. Actually, I think I'll wait till the baby is born, since I'll have many nights where I'm stuck on the couch rocking him/her for hours and it's either read or watch another movie...so I think I'll read

LOL, I've heard about the infamous Waterloo and nunnery segments. And that the first 100 or so pages of the novel are all about the Bishop of Digne with no mention of Jean Valjean!

I bought a 20 years old copy from the library, but I'll take me a while since I have all the tests these weeks and it is 1200 pages

Yeah, I love Being John Malkovich, Gangs of New York, and My Best Friend's Wedding, but certainly not because of Diaz.
I'm just reading the back pages of this thread and saw this... I really couldn't agree more. I was kind of taken aback by that comment stating that Cameron Diaz has had a great film career.

    David Poland tweets:

If while attending the theater, you think "I wish I could see this in close-up with a lot of hyper cutting," we have found the movie for you

I don't blame any of the actors for the failures of Les Mis: The Movie. Tom Hooper made audacious shooting choices.... mostly bad ones

Nothing wrong with Russell Crowe's performance... but script for Javert is 1-note and his voice is built for JC Superstar or Evita, not this

Hugh Jackman takes the heat for not really having songs so much as having to carry the story. But he's never allowed to soar. He's a soarer

I LOVE SBCohen & HBCarter, but in Les Mis, they (via TH) take the unreality to a level the makes nearly every moment with them painful.

Honestly, I went in to Les Mis wide open, hopeful... and I found it shocking. Not just not great. Not good.
Is Poland someone with good taste? I never paid much atention to him.

I find him to be a buffoon most of the time, especially with the awards race. But his personality is rather repellent too.

Until very late in the game, he was flogging "Phantom of the Opera" as the BP winner. So you be the judge.

I used to like David Poland back in the late 90's when he had his Hot Button column (first as part of TNT's "roughcut.com" entertainment site and then on his own at "hotbutton.com"). I probably haven't read him with any regularity in 7-8 years though.

Poland used to pick (in advance) one film to promote as BP--in 2007, it was Dreamgirls, for example--and then trashed all of its competition. Not sure whether he still does this, but I would take anything he says with huge grains of salt.

well Poland is dumb, but I do agree about Hoopers shooting of his films. The guy thinks those dutch angles, and crazy almost hand held camera shots work, but they dont. But thats my opinion of course.

Thats the only major negative I have with this film. But I am still optomistic this will go down huge!

I knew Sasha Stone would hate this! Does she have the courage to atleast admit it's because she is still livid Tom Hooper beat her boy Fincher?
This is why Julianne Moore has never won an Oscar
