I think Guy Lodge is right, re: Mirren. She does seem like everyone's fifth choice. I've lost a lot of confidence in her.

    Swank deserved her first Oscar

Umm. no. I'd say there is reasonable parity between Lawrence and Chastain.

I don't see the Academy embracing Hitchcock, I've said that since word got out after New York.
Mirren got her filler nom for The Last Station, all done (for filler.)

My Week with Baby Doll doesn't count as a comparsion, there were fewer AMPAS friendly options last year.

Chastain is OK, but hardly one of the best working actresses. She was awful in The Help IMO. She just happens to be an AD favourite amongst the usual clique...

Chastain is probably the best working actress of her generation. But definitely not The Best Working Actress period.

    OMG.

    It is written.

    Get with the programme, everybody.

Lawrence vs. Chastain is kinda stupid especially since it doesn't really matter which one's older, which one has been in the business a year longer, which one has been more compared to Meryl Streep or which one was in more blockbusters. I'm not sold on Chastain based on a few boring stills, a trailer in which she doesn't speak and something she said herself.

Personally, I would be delighted to see either win, but at the moment, this is clearly JLaw's.
I know I've got a big ego, I really don't know why it's such a big deal, though.

Yes but no way does she deserve the title of two-time Oscar winner like Bette Davis and Elizabeth Taylor (even if both of their first wins was crap, their filmography on a whole and impact in the industry doesn't begin to compare with Swank's).

But that's exactly why she rounds out a top 5 more so than Riva or Watts.

Everyone had Mirren as their 5th choice in 2009 as well, so that's never stopped her before.

I suppose an argument could be made that few will be passionate enough about Mirren's performance to put it at no. 1, but those who see Riva's performance will do that. (I don't necessarily think Riva has a better shot than Mirren atm, but some certainly do.) But then again, "filler" performances get in all the time, and as has been said elsewhere recently, performances that don't seem like they'd inspire "no. 1 placement-type passion" have gotten in.

Weisz? I had totally forgotten about The Deep Blue Sea. I wonder if she's really campaigning hard for this film or if they just wanted her in the magazine just for the sake of having another interview by an A-lister.
