I would like to see Naomi become a threat to win for The Impossible, if only because this race is so lacking in drama at the moment. Am, however, skeptical of the strategy to release it in late December. Are enough people going to watch a film with such heavy subject matter during the holiday season?

^ I dont think it matters that much. They started (November 9th) sending screeners to Oscar voters. So, they are already starting seeing the film and probably blown away by Watts.

Technically, Jlaw is more due than Chastin.

    Lead trumps supporting.

LOL at the trolls thinking JLaw is due for anything. Since when does being a star for a year constitute being due for an Oscar?

I knew I was being a bit too technical.

@crazyfits3600 Who's saying she's due? Lawrence and Chastain have been going at it about the same times. Two years. They aren't due shit. But the people saying that Chastain has the upper hand because she is more due than Lawrence need to get their shit together.

I dont really mind Chastain winning if she deserves it. But I just think its crazy saying that she's going to win without any "real" review; however, I do have to admit I want Lawrence to win.

I wish people would stop saying someone is 'due' for an Oscar. Just let the performances speak for themselves.

Unless Chastain had a handicap or an OMG narrative (Jennifer Hudson), her background is such a non-issue. As for her age...age probably affects someone like Emmanuelle Riva these days. She's not likely to win given her age. But the difference between 22 and 35, when both actresses are relatively "new" (meaning, neither one has been in the business longer. It might make a difference in like one voter out of the 5,000 but people are not going to care lol.

In the movie business, Jlaw is a veteran next to Jessica.

And we don't know Chastain's age, it s the best kept secret in Hollywood right now.

I can already see Sasha rooting for Chastain all season long because " it s good to have a REAL strong female character in movies you know, instead of a starlette playing crazy and bouncing her t&a".

    No.

Lawrence first break was in 08, in that forgotten Burning Plane movie that no one knows was made or released or bothered to watch. 2010 she was Oscar nominated in an indie film that will most likely be seen much like Frozen River is now...yeah...took me a minute to remember what that movie was again too. Lawrence is only a household name because of X-Men and Hunger Games. She's no vet. She's the current it girl. Chastain is no better, no worse. She starred in every movie made last year, so she's a household name because chances are, if you flipped a coin you landed on her movie and saw her face. Neither is due shit because neither has proven shit. They are just there, making movies and will be until they reach forty and start losing film roles to Elle Fanning who is far more talented than both of these women ATM .

Elle Fanning scares me, she shouldn't be that good at her age ...

That scene in Super 8 gets me every time.

Then I'd be more convinced about her not being likely to lose out to someone like Chastain. Otherwise, not that convinced.

"Succesfully" arguing, I must add, consdering your new argument has nothing to do with age or stage training.
Sure, Bening lost for all these reasons and not because Swank was the undeniable winner.

Also, it'll be super refreshing to have Lawrence vs. Chastain this year instead of the Streep vs. ? we have every year (2010 was like the same thing, with Bening filling in for Streep).

If Chastain's reviews are gonna be really good, I think it may be up to SAG to decide the winner.

So, Bening lost because she lost and Swank won because she won? OMG, I think you're onto something here!

Child, we were arguing why Swank was the undeniable winner. You cannot explain a premise using the premise as the argument itself.

It's a perception thing, I think it matters. Because of her age and background, Chastain immediately was given the sort of "gravitas" that Lawrence utterly lacks, even though they have both been film stars for about 5 minutes and have both gotten lots of acclaim. Chastain was the one being heralded as the "new Streep" in many circles last year, because of that. When people are sticking that lable on you, it's an advantadge. She wouldn't be getting any of that if she was Lawrence's age and didn't have that "serious stage actress" background.

Lawrence, from my perspective, is percieved differently to Chastain. As a fine young actress ( currently lumped in with the Kristen Stewart's and Emma Stones, but maybe seen as more promising) who could potentially be a big fat movie star. But she hasn't got the gravitas, the "new Streep" stuff that was being tossed so casually to Chastain last year. Maybe you won't think that makes a difference in a close race between the two, but I think it might.

    .
Not saying it never happens that actresses can't win for these type of role (especially in BP frontrunners), but it's realtively rare, isn't. And Hunt's win is widely derided.

Wait, so now the discussion is about which one is more "due"?

    Lord.
