I can't wait until this receives six acting nominations from the Globes.

    Roger Friedman says...
...And then there’s Hugh Jackman. He’ll be nominated for Best Actor and will likely win. The movie hangs on him, and he carries it from beginning to end. It’s his best work ever, the pinnacle for him as he combines his musical and dramatic talents. Hooper said in the Q&A he wouldn’t have made the movie if Jackman didn’t exist, and he’s right. This is the role of a lifetime, like Robert Goulet in “Camelot.” Wolverine may have to break out in song in his next film.
Tom Hooper steered this ship, and it’s a massive cruise liner. The thing Hooper does so well is bring history to life–whether it’s John Adams or Queen Elizabeth I or the stuttering King George. In the “John Adams” miniseries, there’s a great breakfast scene in which John and Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin all get together in Paris. It’s as if we’re eavesdropping on these famous but inaccessible people. In “Les Miz,” Hooper pulls off just this trick. The canvas is broad but the characters are intimate and so well drawn that you feel you know them, and their French revolt, but the time the end comes.

Here's why I like Crowe's choice: Javert is the uncompromising traditionalist, & his strict, methodical singing separates him from the rest.

@krf7 Nope. Just placed 5 in gurus because no voters had seen yet. I figured it would rank, but you never know how voters react til they do.

This is an interesting tweet. If the audience was "theater-loving" can the people at this screening perhaps be more predisposed to liking this?

This is wrong. Ben-Hur only had 12 Oscar nominations. It's Titanic and All About Eve that have 14.

This made me laugh because there's that behind the scenes thing where Jackman and Hathaway and some of the others are talking about how great it is that they get to sing live so they can convey emotions and stuff. I'm picturing Russell Crowe like his Fightin Round the World character in South Park when he starts singing.

I think he was saying NYC, in general, is theater loving -- being the home fo Broadway and all.

    Will Oscar have Riva Fever?

That's true and Ben-Hur, Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King are all tied for the most wins with 11.

I was thinking this too. Like, it screened for a group of NYCers, who are generally much more disposed than your average American to love musicals and all things Broadway. Not that I expect Les Mis to have anything close to a middling reception overall, but the NY reaction (i.e., 15 min standing ovation) may be at least a bit on the extreme end.

Could be less disposed to like it? If the movie *wasn't* any good, I coukd see theatre-lovers having an over-the-top negative reaction, because the stage show is so loved?

Not to mention that these sort of screenings, with the director and cast in attendance, are kind of set up for these sorts of reactions. I'm not saying that I don't expect Les Mis to be well received from here on out, but I'm just a bit skeptical of the all out hyperbole that comes along with these kinds of events.

Who knows? I remember reading that the Lincoln screening was supposedly stocked with Spielberg fans, but I think the eventual critical reception ended up being better than the first screening would have led you to believe.

Steven Zeitchik ‏@ZeitchikLAT Hathaway is a stand-out, albeit in very few scenes; Jackman and Crowe singing is solid but doesn’t reach for as much. #LesMiserables

True and this is why I say that I still expect that this will have a very positive overall reaction. I just tend to take all the "O.M.G. This film will change your life!" talk with a grain of salt.

+1. I'm really looking forward to this and hope it's as good as these tweets would indicate, but an enthusiastic reaction in special screenings like this doesn't necessarily mean rave reviews in general.

Of course. The Lincoln example just stood out because it goes against what one would expect.

Ah, it wouldn't be AD without frantic reactions to first screening reactions. I read somewhere that the screening was packed with Broadway actors, friends of the cast, and theater types. So all this proves is that it'll satisfy the fans. Not to be a negative nancy, just to caution people not to start suddenly predicting Les Miz to win everything.

You're never a negative nancy so don't worry.
