I agree with McTeague that for Pat and Tiffany, it is not so much a happy ending but more a little moment of victory. Russell in no way implies that their problems are solved. However, I do believe that with his film, the audience wants a happy ending. We are hopeful creatures after all. I don't think Russell betrays his characters for one moment. Just that people are going to read whatever they want from this ending, which I thought was bittersweet and perfect.

Cooper's main struggle with mental illness throughout this movie is agreeing to go back on medication. But for the most part this is a story about a guy who is coming out of years of institutionalization that's really worked for him, and despite a few stumbles along the way, he has largely taken control of his illness. For me the fact that it doesn't dwell on how fucked these people are is a large part of this movie's charm.
I did not expect this thread to be the one where Sage repeatedly and successfully mounted defenses against the Baying Hounds of European Dourness.

He truly is losing his Canadian heritage and becoming a 'Merican.

    LOL, yes.

The unofficial title was actually much better: El Lado Bueno de las Cosas, which actually translates, more or less, to (gasp!) Silver Linings Playbook

That's the title in Spain! And yeah, it's a good title for something so hard to translate like Silver Linings Playbook (The good side of things).

Here it's called Silver Linings Playbook. Because we don't translate titles, unless it's a movie for the smallest ones .

Same here. Except it's just Silver Linings. Because Playbook is too hard to understand, apparently.

I don't get why the Swedes have translated this title. It's bizare and it has made it sound like a rom-com starring Amanda Seyfried and Achton Kutcher. We, thankfully, for the past 20 years or so have almost never translated titles here unless it's children movies so this has rightfully been critisized by a lot of people.

Wasn't there a thread long ago with bad/strange translation titles?

Up until De Niro got so involved with the betting, and then the football game, I loved this. Too bad it got so slow and dull towards the end, but before that I thought it was hilarious without completely ignoring the mental hangups of Cooper. I really don't see where the O'Russell hate comes from, especially since it's way better than his last film. Any other year Cooper would have won the Oscar, and Lawrence was well deserved.

It was surprisingly well-translated here; the literal translation is After the Rain, the Sun Always Shines which is a saying here.
I know I've got a big ego, I really don't know why it's such a big deal, though.
