This Is 40 just looks like something the writers branch is going to turn up its nose at no matter how good it is. WGA could possibly bite, especially if we have a lot of disqualifications (as usual.)

Great. Now who's going to watch Sunday Rose on SAG night??

WGA is 100% going for it. Even Knocked Up got in.

Apatow probably barely missed an Academy Award nomination for Knocked Up.

Like I said, he is already campaigning this screenplay like crazy. Hopefully it'll pay off.

Les Mis is clearly going to be a juggernaut, so I think it gets nominated here.

Very possible. Particularly if the branch takes time to read the screenplay rather than just what is on screen.

According to Tapley, Les Mis isn't eligible for the WGA.

Beasts surely isn't either. David Magee was also ineligible when he was in contention for Finding Neverland, but maybe he's a WGA member now.

I think Les Mis will get in, but Life of Pi won't. The consensus on that movie is so much that it's a directors vision, and it isn't a strong enough overall contender where that wouldn't matter. Beasts is also vulnerable here: getting the screenplay snubbed at the Spirits was not good.

So I guess This is 40 will get a WGA nod? LMAO, Dirk will be happy.

I don't know if Beasts is ineligible. I assumed it was but a WGA member tweeted that members got the screener. There would be no reason to send it if it's ineligible. A lot of the films that are eligible don't even get sent to the WGA.

I'm pretty sure it will. I'm echoing Dirk on this, but Apatow has gotten in there twice and the early word on This is 40 is that it's his best film. Honestly, Adapted is pretty weak this year, I would not be surprised if he gets all the way to the Oscars. Box office will tell, I'm skeptical it will be as big a hit as 40 Year Old Virgin/Knocked Up.

TWC Guilds has added the screenplays for The Master, Quartet and Silver Linings Playbook to their site.

So far, by the looks of things, Tony Kushner looks like he's got this award in the bag. Such a shame that Kushner's co-writers John Logan and Paul Webb won't win as well...

I'm wondering, can The Perks of Being a Wallflower sneak in here? Considering how open the last spot is, it seems possible a left-field contender like that could sneak in.

This is the exact opposite of what the movie is like. Lincoln has wit and humor, both pulled off beautifully. It draws from history but it's got surprises in it, too.

It's not merely a writer's piece either. It's directed with a complete understanding of the material so it doesn't come off flat. You really should see the film for yourself.

And guany, I've read a large portion of the screenplay, and it's not as "written" as it appears to be. It's only 125 and a half pages, which, considering its running time and the amount of dialogue is pretty impressive.

Lincoln is very strong in this category, among many others, and will likely continue to dominate the critics awards.

I would actually put Perks in the Top 10 for this category right now, though that's more a testament to how dire it is. If it qualifies, I could easily see WGA nominating it.

People talk about Original being weak, but this category is the weak one., especially with Les Mis disappointing, The Hobbit confirmed as a non-contender, and Life of Pi starting to fade.

    1. Lincoln
    2. Silver Linings Playbook
    3. Argo
    4. Beasts of the Southern Wild
    5. The Sessions

    6. Life of Pi
    7. This is 40
    8. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Lincoln, SLP and Argo are safe. I think Beasts will get in, too.

    Fifth spot -- who knows?
I fear Best Exotic could happen.

If Dirk gets his way and This Is 40 is nominated I am going to scream.

But yeah, The Sessions. Probably written off too soon, I can see it getting three nods.
