I'm not surprised at all about the lack of Quartet here. I really don't think this film will be a factor for anything at all.

Oh and it's going to be funny when Meryl wins this.

These awards move on a completely different dimension than the Oscars. I am not saying that Quartet is safe for anything, but this really proves - not much.

I agree with you 100% in that this has absolutely no bearing on Oscar whatsoever. I've just had a general feeling that Quartet is not going anywhere at all for a while and this just reconfirms my own personal feeling.

Well, things look iffy to say the least for Quartet.
But you never know. If it takes on, it has pedigree, narrative and all that shit.
My point was that Quartet never needed whatever these awards are called to make it big in the US.

None at all. It can be somewhat of an indicator for BAFTA, but this year, British independent film didn't really break through and Marigold Hotel is the only one we'll be seeing nominated for anything.

The only way this group connected to Oscars is that this may indicate slightly who is going to make big splash at BAFTA and who is in trouble. Total absence of AK is certainly not a good sign. Quartet will still do much better at BAFTAs, me thinks. I am still shocked by the reception of Song for Marion.

Eh, is Anna Karenina eligible? Its budget is $30M, right? I highly doubt it's considered an independent film. But I may be wrong.

Anyway, yeah. Quartet's only chances are Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress and the lack of notices for both Smith and Collins is not a good indicator for the BAFTAs. Smith's only chances were probably GG and BAFTA, she might miss the BAFTA nod (though I'm sure she will be nominated in Supporting for 'Marigold').

yeah i can see Dench sweeping the brit awards, which is pushing me to replace mirren and put her in that best actress spot for oscars.

I doubt Hitchcock is a british indie movie, or is it?
Mirren's chances at Oscars are still better than Dench's I think.

Still surprised about TIL's noms. I mean they could have overlooked it pretty easily.

Agree, I mean honestly how anyone can watch that film and think "wow what a great screenplay" blows my mind.

Not much better than the horror that was Albert Nobbs

Not too surprising, given that BAFTA nominated The Iron Lady's screenplay. For some reason the Brits seem to love Abi Morgan.

TILs main problem was the directing, editing, and screenplay. In that order.

    Well, whatever.
And yet there's at least a bit british passion for the screenplay.

Just checked, but if Meryl really could win this, it's the only award even Helen Mirren didn't win for The Queen!
(she won a special award that year anyway)
But I doubt she will, so only that nom is just great.

I could see Dench winning it, but Meryl probably isn't losing.

I'd be shocked if Meryl lost this considering the lineup. Who cares if the film came out last year.
