Lincoln is looking strong with the possibility of winning. However, it probably doesn't have the same crowd-pleasing entertainment value of Argo.

Summit and Lionsgate have hit the ground running: screeners are out for The Impossible, The Hunger Games, Arbitrage, Perks of Being a Wallflower and Stand Up Guys.

I just came back from a screening of Life of Pi. While I really enjoyed the movie, I don't think it has the stuff to really be a contender to win Best Picture. The film is visually an incredible film and the 3D really enhances the experience. If it nominated for Best Cinematography and Visual Effects, it should win both as I don't see as of now any contenders that can rival the film in terms of it's visuals. The reasons why I don't think it can win BP is that it is an emotional film, just not in an obvious sentimental way that AMPAS likes. There are parts in the film where the story drags. Also I am not sure the film will do well at the box office, as there is not a large target audience for the film. The film will be lucky to make back its budget. But while it may not win BP, it seems like a really strong contender for a nomination for BP. I ranked it somewhere between 5-7th place right now in terms.
The film is also on the fence I think for Adapted Screenplay and Director nominations. I think particular praise should be given to Ang Lee who really is able to translate the material to the screen. It really requires a strong and visionary director like Lee to pull off a life like this, but when he competing against more crowd pleasing film like Argo and SLP and freaking Speilberg I could see him getting snubbed. Anyways people should try to watch the film in 3D if they have a chance.

No idea about the last spot I would have said Django Unchained but after seeing the trailer for life of pi im more inclined to go with that.....it has that over sentimental, OTT inspirational feel about it....which of course we know the academy love.

Anyone wants to know why Silver Linings Playbook and Jennifer Lawrence are getting all these buzz?

I think the film actually has a much better shot at breaking out at the box office than you seem to think. The book was pretty popular, and Fox has been marketing the heck out of it. Also Silver Linings Playbook going limited instead of wide gives it less competition. If it broke out and made say, $100+ million, do you think that would make it a more likely winner?

Could Skyfall surprise in the category?:
According to the report over at Deadline, it's very possible. The film screened in front of a packed audience at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences:
"James Bond and Abraham Lincoln both were very impressive at the box office this weekend but they also killed at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences with packed turnaway crowds, certainly among the biggest of the year there and a good omen for their Oscar chances. For Lincoln Academy Award attention is expected but now MGM/Sony’s (with Eon) Skyfall, thanks to top reviews and the best business ever for a Bond, is also surprising pundits as an emerging Best Picture contender. One member told me they felt it is definitely Best Picture material and that was seconded by another, a self-confessed Bond uber-fan who proclaimed it the best ever."

Skyfall is not, I repeat not getting a Best Picture nomination. Not happening. This is still the Bond franchise no matter how good its reviews and BO are.
