I do believe in momentum, and taking the narrative in an awards season. But to be fair, Weinsteins simply made a calculation that might've worked before other times, but this time it didn't. Or I don't think it will at least.

They should probably start airing that "Golden Globe Nominee Barbra Streisand!" ad in order to trick people into seeing it.

Great. Now who's going to watch Sunday Rose on SAG night??

Call me naive, I'm surprised JR did that well today considering the well-criticized abysmal marketing. (If anything its TI40 that is performing like I thought JR would. Go figure.)

Interestingly DL did mention both were modestly budgeted (JR $50-60 million, TI40 $50 million) so I guess....the modest budget movie has returned! HOORAY!

(Even during his post-Oprah couch jump, pre-GHOST PROTOCOL down and out period, Cruise was still a star overseas so JR is a bargain for Paramount and that'll bring a profit.)

    Friday numbers

    The Hobbit - $10.17 million (-73%)
    Jack Reacher - $5.1 million ($1,521 PTA)
    This is 40 - $3.7 million ($1,271)

    The Guilt Trip - $1.5 million ($614)
    Monsters, Inc. 3D - $1.4 million ($531)
Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away - $802,000 ($955)

    Zero Dark Thirty - $115,000 ($23,000)
    The Impossible - $37,700 ($2,513)

Pretty mediocre weekend as a whole for, like, everything, except ZDT.

    The Impossible.

(Granted, it WILL probably rebound over next weekend, but that's still a VERY mediocre number).

The per theatre average for ZDT is not as amazing compared to other limited releases this year.

The Master and Moonrise Kingdom had way better PTA in the same and one less theater. I just feel it should have been in that territory. And Lincoln was in 11 theaters so that made it's PTA more impressive too.

Meaning, you wanted it to have the highest PTA ever. Being 26th all-time and 3rd in the year is not good enough.

I just think, it should have made more with the buzz and reviews surrounding it?

Just not as impressive as the others.

I don't understand those rankings. It's not strictly a ratio of production budget to gross, because then the biggest flop would have been Oogieloves. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is at #1 and Battleship didn't even make the Top 10. For the latter, it could be argued that it performed better internationally but the same is true of John Carter, which did make the list.
